The Winery Dogs - Unleashed in Japan

[Edited on 1/10/2015 by fender31]

Thanks for posting Fender31. Definitely my favorite new rock band. Such incredibly talented musicians making some great music.

Caught a clip of these guys on the Palladia channel last night from, I believe, Sonicsphere festival 2014...Good stuff. Is that Billy Sheehan on bass?

You are welcome charlesinator and yes chain that is Billy Sheehan on Bass...they are on my to see list for 2015..Great Band.

Hopefully they will be touring with a new CD in 2015, Fender31. All the members have other projects with probably Mike Portnoy juggling the most. If you haven't purchased the recent Essential Kotzen ... you may want to Richie's recent solo work is very similar to the Winery Dogs. He is a heck of a singer and player - my current fave actually.

So Portnoy and Kotzen are the other players? A three piece "super group" if ever there was one. I noticed on the Palladia clip that Kotzen was playing a very sweet Fender Telecaster through I believe a stack of Marshall's. Sweet tone and very tasty licks I must say. A hell of a lot of sound coming from just the three of them. While different music for sure, their power reminded me of Gov't Mule circa 1996ish.

I believe that's his signature Fender. He's been playing it for a while. I really appreciate the link, but all those quick cuts just make me woozy.
Stumbled on this as well:
THE WINERY DOGS, the power trio featuring drummer Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ADRENALINE MOB), legendary bassist Billy Sheehan (MR. BIG, TALAS, DAVID LEE ROTH) and guitarist/vocalist Richie Kotzen (MR. BIG, POISON), will reconvene this month to begin work on its sophomore album, to be made available later in the year. A world tour will follow the new CD's release.
Kotzen was asked by GetYourRockOut whether he felt any pressure trying to follow up the success of THE WINERY DOGS' self-titled debut album as the group prepares to begin work on its sophomore CD. "Personally, no," Richie said. "With music, I'm one of those people that, like… I don't think about anything other that doing what feels right to me. I mean, I probably could have put myself in situations where a lot more people would know about me, but I don't, because I don't wanna play music that I don't wanna play. I learned that in the past. And so either, personally, I'll play music that I wanna play, that I believe in, or I won't play music at all. And I've done that; that's me. And I think the other guys [in THE WINERY DOGS], I won't speak for them, but making a record with them, and knowing them as well as I do now, I don't think THE WINERY DOGS would make a record that the three of us would put out that we all didn't love.
"Once you start looking at music like a math equation and you start making choices that are outside the realm of creativity, you put yourself in a situation for a lot of emotional failure. And when you are there, then the music is meaningless and everything suffers and then things fall apart. So, I think, whatever we do, we'll do what feels natural and what the three of us can get behind. Even in the decision-making process, if I make a suggestion and one of the other guys loves it, but the other guy doesn't, we don't do it. We don't move unless all three of us agree to move. And then that way, once you're in a position, at least you know all three of us decided to go here; it's not like we were drug here by… you know what I'm trying to say?! By someone that didn't wanna go there."
Asked if THE WINERY DOGS will make a conscious effort to create a second album that will be stylistically similar to the debut, Richie said: "I don't think in those terms. We're gonna write what we we're gonna write. We're gonna get in a room and we're gonna do what we did last time. Mike's gonna play a drum beat, I'm gonna sing a chorus idea and Billy's gonna play a bass thing, and we're gonna jam on it and manipulate it and write to it. And it's gonna be what it's gonna be, because, like I said, music isn't math to me; music is something that you feel, that comes from creativity.

It was great. Thanks for the lick. Lots of notes played without a pick. Impressive for sure. Portnoy alone makes any band great. These guys are my favorite band of his currently.

Richie has both a signature tele and a strat both manufactured in Japan (because like so many of the shred guys Japan be berry, berry good to them.) As far as the tasty licks, Richie is such a technically gifted guitarist because of his shred background. He and fellow Pennsylvanian guitarist, Greg Howe are responsible for adding a few tricks to the guitar lexicon. Richie has also played some jazz/fusion with the likes of Stanley Clarke no less. So his harmonic sensibility is more akin to Derek than say Warren. Combine all this with Richie's relatively recent decision to eschew the pick putting him in favorable comparison to none other than Jeff Beck IMHO. 😮 What all this adds up to is a truly modern day power trio. (A 2015 Rush?)

I am starting to listen to Ritchie more and more..I find his singing voice to be a lot like Chris Cornell of Soundgarden.

anyone who like winery dogs check out red zone riders featuring guitar player vinnie moore

I hadn't thought about that, but I can see it ... in a more soulful, bluesy kinda way.
Here's one of my favorite Richie tunes:
Also dig this one. Richie's can rock a ballad.

I also hear early David Coverdale before all the shrieking.

Billy Sheehan.
Local 1970s-80s legendary Buffalo NY bar band....Talas...

This genre of music I do like, but for some reason I really cant get into them. I dont think they are bad by any means, but the music they make is really nothing memorable to me. Kinda run of the mill.
I like Portnoy. Sheehan is good, but almost plays a lead type bass. Very flashy and throws out alot of guitar type licks and tricks. Almost alittle too much for me at times. He was that way wtih Roth and others. I recognize Ritchen as being very talented, just not my cup of tea.
Not trying to dog these guys, I really wish I could get into them. Maybe I should give them more of a chance.
I really wanted to hear the project when Sykes was involved with Billy and Mike. Now that guy is a monster guitar player.
In the mean time....
Check out Portnoy's other band.

JOHN SYKES: Audio Samples Of Upcoming Solo Album
Audio samples of some of the tracks that will appear on the forthcoming solo album from guitarist/vocalist John Sykes (WHITESNAKE, BLUE MURDER, THIN LIZZY) can be streamed using the SoundCloud.
The title of the CD has not yet been disclosed, but there are some fantastic guest musicians on board, including:
* Josh Freese (WEEZER, A PERFECT CIRCLE, GUNS N' ROSES, DEVO): Drums
* Tony Franklin (THE FIRM): Bass
* Chris Chaney (JANE'S ADDICTION): Bass
* Curt Bisquera (SARAH MCLACHLAN): Drums
* Jamie Muhoberac (THE ALL-AMERICAN REJECTS, FLEETWOOD MAC, THE ROLLING STONES): Keyboards
Sykes's much-hyped collaborative project with drummer Mike Portnoy (DREAM THEATER, AVENGED SEVENFOLD, ADRENALINE MOB) came to an abrupt end in January 2012. Portnoy later blamed the split on the fact that he "couldn't wait around any longer" for Sykes to get ready to enter the studio.
Portnoy and Sykes announced they were working together during a July 2011 taping of season eight of VH1 Classic's "That Metal Show". The program's co-host Eddie Trunk tweeted about the project at the time, "I heard demos. Sounds like killer BLUE MURDER meets '1987' WHITESNAKE. Amazing!" He also said that the new group would perform some BLUE MURDER material when it hits the road.
The project in 2011 demoed more than a dozen songs at a Los Angeles studio, with Portnoy describing one track as "copping the [LED] ZEPPELIN/[BLACK] SABBATH vibe" and another as "[PINK] FLOYD meets [DEEP] PURPLE!!! Some serious old-school classic rock."
Sykes announced his departure from THIN LIZZY in July 2009, explaining that "I feel it's time to get back to playing my own music."

Everyone has a plan, till you get punched in the face,

I didn't realize Talas, and I assume therefore Billy Sheehan, are from the Buffalo area. I wonder if that's where the Steve Vai connection comes from? I seem to recall reading that Vai recruited Sheehan for the post Van Halen David Lee Roth solo stuff..And Vai is from Buffalo as well.

Steve Vai is from Carle Place, NY on Long Island. Same town that Joe Satriani is from. It's possible Steve may have been aware of Billy and Talas from his NY days.
