Saw them last night in Miami and they Rocked big time!!!!!! They were by far the best I have seen them years!!! Great energy,Roger's voice was strong as was Pete's. Great supporting musicians!!! Kudos to Simon Townsend added fine rhythm guitar and great background vocals. Pino Palladino'
,though not John Enwistle, is a great bassist and Zac Starky really did a great job. And what a great set list. If this is really their last tour, they are going down in a blaze of glory. Long Live Rock!!!

Thanks for the review. I'm still on the fence for the November Verizon show in DC but reviews like yours will push me over.

You really go Billy. If they are anything like they were last night you will see a fantastic show.

Great news. I saw Daltry outside of Detroit (Rochester actually) probably 20 years ago. He was doing an English Rock Opera thing. There was a full symphony which started the night off. They played for a while before he played.

Then he came out. Most of the show was Zeppelin, Pink Floyd and Who stuff. It was amazing. Cool hearing him cover Zeppelin.

Glad you enjoyed it.

Well, maybe not incredible, but very good, and my friend and I agreed that it was better than the Quadrophenia show a couple of years ago. Pete was his usual, curmudgeonly yet hilarious self (saying at one point that Dylan was from here-it's Duluth MN not GA Pete!). I got a kick out of him twice getting pissy w/ the sound man, as it showed to me he still cares about his craft.

The newspaper here reported that the set was 2 hrs and 20 min. No encore, which is fine w/ me as I'd rather that they play through as they did. Roger sounded as good as the last 3 times I've heard him over the last 5 yrs, though it seemed his vocals were turned down a tad. Zac led an incredible groove in Generation, my personal highlight (along w/ the Tommy set).

I Can't Explain
The Seeker
Who Are You
The Kids Are Alright
I Can See for Miles
Pictures of Lily
My Generation
Magic Bus
Behind Blue Eyes
Bargain
Join Together
You Better You Bet
I'm One
Love, Reign O'er Me
Eminence Front
A Quick One (While He's Away)
Amazing Journey
It's a Boy
Sparks
Pinball Wizard
See Me, Feel Me
Baba O'Riley
Won't Get Fooled Again

Reign:

Hey Brock, my brother and I went to the same show last night and I couldn't agree more.

The clips I had seen recently of Pete and Roger led me to have very low expectations for their performance, but those expectations were completely blown away. I don't know if we just caught them on a good night, but I was not prepared for that. They both had their share of "senior moments," like Daltrey butchering Pinball Wizard and Pete forgetting what key a song was in. But their actual playing--Roger's voice and Pete's guitar--was miles better than I expected.

Bargain is one of my favorite Who deep cuts and one of the greatest love songs ever written in my opinion. Throw in the fact that they hadn't played it yet on the tour, and it was probably the biggest surprise of the night and a real treat.

You are right that the jammed-out My Generation was one highlight, but that Amazing Journey>Sparks jam left me in a puddle on the floor. Amazing!

I highly doubt I'll ever see them again, if only because I don't think they could ever top last night.

From another thread on this website....

"missed the who on thursday, somebody at dylan in the lobby wearing a who shirt said that was the best performance he had seen in 60 years"

Wild hyperbole provoked by Aftershow Glow Syndrome, also known as AGS? Certainly.

But it was a really, REALLY good show.

I was a big Who fan since the early 70's.... and I appreciate the sentiment towards the new show. but I still remember seeing the Who at Madison Square Garden June 14th friday night last night of their US quadrophenia Tour... to this day the best Who show Ive ever seen........... had 7th row center.......sitting in front of Johnny and Edgar Winter... and another opinion , top 3 in my all time list.

I was at 3 of the 4 shows at Madison Square Garden in June 1974. I was at the shows on the 10th, 13th and 14th, Monday, Thursday and Friday. The Monday show was marred by sound problems, as the report by Rick Salata dated 11.6.74 stated. The Thursday show was a good one, but the Friday show of the 14th was probably the greatest show I've ever seen, of any artist.

This show was the last WHO show until October 1975, and obviously the WHO knew that they were looking at a long hiatus. They didn't disappoint. The Quadrophenia songs were amazing, particularly The Punk and the Godfather, Dr. Jimmy, and Bell Boy, and other highlights were Tattoo, Won't Get Fooled (of course) and Baba O'Reilly. The real highlight was See Me, Feel Me. I've been to many concerts and sports events at MSG, but the standing ovation at the end of that song was the longest and loudest I've ever experienced. The band was obviously touched by it, and if I had to guess I would think that they would remember that show. I've never seen a live rock show that stayed with me for so long after experiencing it. The WHO pulled out all the stops, and that night is one show of many that I saw in the 70's that I'll never forget.

Rick Thomas

I attended all of the Madison Square Garden shows that June (1974) and Matt is spot-on with his assesment. I was fortunate enough to see all the great bands of the 70's and 80's (Led Zeppelin, Rolling Stones ... before they went show biz, The Clash, etc.) and, by far, the best concert I ever attended was The Who show of June 14th. At the end of "Summertime Blues" Roger Daltry announced to the crowd "This is the night ... I can feel it!" and Pete looked at him and nodded with a smile and it was pure emotion and intensity after that. The only disconnect I have with Matt's review is that I'm 99% sure that the long ovation (which I will never forget either) came after "Magic Bus."

I'd say Roger gave a Herculean effort on the Reign video, especially the last third of the song. Remarkable for a guy his age to sing rock and roll like that.

From wiki...

"A four night stand at Madison Square Garden in New York City ended on 14 June with a triple-guitar-smash by Townshend and Moon (although some reports have Daltrey joining in)."

Here are 12 somewhat poor quality audio clips from the show. It rocks for sure!

I was at least one of those June MSG shows in 1975 and it was great. Golden Earring opened the show and I remembers
Them ending with Radar Love and I remember the drummer being intentionally ejected.from the kit at the end of the show. The Who were you Gand greatbut due to retain substances and not thebestseats Ihave seen 2bettershows. Both were greatest hit shows with good seats. The,I believe 1999 show,if yearis correct,at the Coral Sky Ampitheater was spectacular. Towns headway on fire that night and the whole band was in great form. This years show, though not as great as that 1999 show, was so good because it greatly exceeded my expectations and it might the last time to see the guys, even if without on and Enwhistle there is no real Who.
To do this the day,the Who,along with the Beatlesand the Grateful Dead are my 3 favorite (Rock) bands. The Brothers, the Stones and Yes are right behind.

Still on a Who kick, and discovered that one of my favorite classic Who shows is on Youtube! Smile Just the audio, but still worth checking out.

Here is Shakin' All Over, with Smokestack Lightning and other teases included....

From that link you can find the rest of the show, and trust me, you want to hear the whole thing!
