While listening to my Ipod I came across the song "One More Ride" complete with vocals. The song, as an instrumental, was part of the Idlewild South Deluxe release. The vocal version is considerably longer. Anyone know why this was not released as part of that package? I like the song much better with Gregg's vocal. The instrumental always felt like it was just a backing track. Seems like a completed original song from the original six should have seen the light of day. Wonder if this might have been Gregg putting the kabosh on things? Unfortunately could not find a Youtube of the song. Here are the lyrics:

Those lyrics are taken from a Johnny Cash song called "One More Ride." It's not related to the Allmans track. I can't find lyrics to the ABB song online and I remember bits and pieces. I could post them here later. As far as what happened- I assumed it was Gregg's call since they wiped his vocal from the track released on Dreams. I assumed he didn't like his lyrics since he never wrote anything else even a little like it. It's does make you wonder about a path not taken.

Here's the song, in a lo-fi version:

I'm certain that Marley's right. I read somewhere that Gregg (and maybe Dickey) didn't like the lyrics so they were scrubbed for eventual release.

It's the only song the two wrote together, as far as I know, so that gives it some historical interest. And of course, it has Duane. What more could anyone ask for? Grin

According to Gregg's book and a couple interviews I read about Dickey's song writing, Gregg said he didn't know Dickey real well when he wanted to get involved with the song writing. Berry knew Dickey real well and Duane had gotten to known Dickey and they liked each other.

But after trying to write with Dickey, Gregg wondered if Dickey knew how to write a song. They tried to write a song together for Idlewild South but it was never finished and Gregg was especially bothered with how Dickey wanted to change the lyrics so Gregg quit working on it. Gregg said the other guys wanted to record it anyway (One More Ride) but Gregg didn't like it so it wasn't used and Gregg in his book says that it was never really finished.

Gregg said he avoided writing with Dickey again. But Dickey wrote an instrumental and another song for Idlewild South that became good songs after they arranged them then another instrumental that was good after it was arranged. Then Dickey writes 4 songs for Brothers and Sisters which became the band's ONLY number one album and Ramblin Man becomes their only hit single and suddenly Dickey thinks he is the real song writer for the band and would dominate all our albums except the last one with his songs.

Apparently Gregg didn't like that and never really got over Queen of Hearts being blocked for Brothers and Sisters.

Gregg also says in his book he never got over losing his brother which the band never recovered from and it changed the band from then on. Gregg says here in his book in the part about One More Ride that he thought about his brother every day of his life and his brother was the number 2 guitar player in rock right behind Hendrix and the best who was ever in the ABB. Gregg said Duane could light a fire on stage in a New York minute. He played and rode his motorcycle at one of two speeds. Wide open and parked. Gregg said he wanted to show Duane that Rolling Stone list of 100 players so badly and figures somehow Duane knew he was voted number 2 of all time.

I noticed when they were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, Gregg ( very drunk) said during his brief remarks that his brother was the best guitar player he ever knew and DICKEY nodded his head and clapped. Good for Dickey.

It's too bad Dickey and Gregg didn't have more chemistry writing songs together. I wonder if one more ride was ever played in a live show as a jam?
