Terrific show by the Genesis tribute band The Musical Box at the Tarrytown NY Music Hall this evening. I've seen the band a number of times, and this show was a good twist.

Their usual deal is to recreate a specific tour / show, so you know in advance that you are going to see the 1973 concert for the "Selling England by the Pound" tour, for example. They have 4 or 5 different tours that they have recreated over the past two decades or so. Their attention to details - slide show, lights, props, costume, sound, between-song banter - is astonishing. I'll listen to a 1974 bootleg and then go see ths band, and they will have every bit of stage chat from the bootleg down pat. Until this tour.

Having probably done their usual tours as many times as they can, The Musical Box is now putting on The Genesis Extravaganza, a show that consists of a setlist of 1969-1976 songs that they WISH Genesis had played, including some songs that Genesis never played live. Spoilers here:

The first set was all Wind & Wuthering / Trick of the Tail material, some as a medley, mostly instrumental. Amazing.
The second set was a selection of songs from The Lamb.
The third set was a sampling of songs from 1969-1973, with some nice odd choices: "Time Table" and "After the Ordeal," for example.

They really stepped back from the emphasis on costumes for this show, and the music and the presentation felt very fresh and powerful. Their drum seat was filled last week by Jonathan Mover, who was in Satriani's band at one point as well as in GTR, and he was really excellent, powerful, authoritative, if a little rusty in spots. He had Phil's classic cannon drum-sound down pat. He was an instant fan favorite.

If you like old Genesis, or prog rock, or just bands that stretch out on complex instrumental sections, this is for you.

I have never seen the Musical Box but I have heard how special they are in a direct tribute. Very theatrical (as were the Gabriel Years) and very skilled (They sure can Hackett). I know of this live era where the zany meets the genious. Gabriel is all in with that shaved strip right through the center of his scalp in that tour you speak of.

I have to check them out. Thanx

Sang, this was my 8th time, and the new approach sure led to a very fresh sound and feel to it all.
