The Marcus King Band: Soul Insight

The year was 1969. November. I was 15 and my older brother had just come home from college with a stack of records. I ran upstairs to my room to play them.. I picked out one called The Allman Brothers Band, which had just come out the previous month. I began listening. Side one blew me away. Then I switched to side two and thought that was even better. Then back to side one and thought this is better. Then side two again. Played that album into the ground. It hangs in my music room. I still don't know which side I like best! But that album started a life long love affair with the Allman Brothers Band that continues to this day.
Fast forward 47 years later. I am in St. Louis at my favorite Music store skimming through their used Cd's. I come across the Marcus King Band. Soul Insight. Where had I heard of them before? I couldn't recall, but it was worth 8 bucks to take home and give a try.
So I played through the first time and it grabbed me like no other artist since the Allman Brothers first album. I couldn't tell if he was black or white, couldn't tell how old he was, really discovered nothing about the band. But i heard some Greg Allman in the vocals, some Warren Haynes in the guiitar. Blues, jazz, instrumentals; a real variety of styles. All reminiscent of the first Allman Brothers Band record.
The record store clerk told me Marcus has a second cd out, although he did not have it. I ordered that online. Read the liner notes: produced by Warren Haynes . With Warren and Derek Trucks playing on two songs. What a reinforcement to the Allmans tie. I confess I have not played the second CD yet. I am still savoring the first. " Always." " Boone. " I Won't be There". And " Dyin'", my favorite, rings of " Good Lord i Feel Like I'm dyin....
So if you haven't heard about Marcus King Band you have a real treat ahead of you. I hope you find the same enjoyment that I have found, especially with the Allmans hiatus. Maybe this is their successor band...? Enjoy!

I liked the first album a lot, but wasn't a fan of the second one nearly as much. I need to go back and listen to it again.

The band will be in town December 13th at The 20th Century Theatre.
Hopefully they have a place in the Wanee lineup

That's really cool. How did you get that honor? (If you don't mind me asking.)

Donated to whichever crowd funding deal he was doing...I think around $200.
Took a while till there were coming thru Bham before we could set it up but it all worked out well. Fed em a home cooked meal while they were here, too.
Nice group of youngsters!

Liked the first record a lot but absolutely love his new record and have been wearing it out. Lots of good things to come from this 20 year old prodigy. He can sing, play, and write with the best of them already and is learning how to compose working so closely to Warren. Sky is the limit for him and his band. Caught them live two months ago and they were incredible!

My son forwarded this to me from his Spotify bands in the area alerts
20th Century Theater has a capacity of 400
Nice place for a impromptu reunion tour . . . One can Dream . . .
Evan said when he clicked on it Marcus King Band info came up
Glad I already have my ticket

Went to go see Marcus King Band tonight . . . * WOW *
The youtubes are great, in person Excellent
Everyone was dancing and when they played Hot 'Lanta, the joint was a jumpin'. Then he pulled out a Mothership Connection. If they are in your area I highly recommend to go see. Towards the end of the show they even threw in a Mountain Jam tease.
Definitely in my top bands to not miss at Wanee
