1989-90 is a pretty interesting time for the band, they were still figuring this all out again. They had been playing these songs for most of the 80s in Gregg and Dickey's bands so there weren't too many cobwebs, but still hadn't quite gelled like they did by 1991-92. Warren got light years better over that time on the road (transitioning from a PRS to Les Paul didn't hurt either). Johnny Neel was a fantastic musician with a great voice but he just did not fit - I get not copying Chuck's licks on "Jessica" but what he chose to do is definitely a choice.
