Thanks so much for posting this. I was there, just as I was at every Detroit area show, save for one for 22 years. Unfortunately it was The H.O.R.D.E. tour. 😟

I think this was a great year as it was Derek's first year. As much as I was bummed that Warren wasn't in the band (or Jack for that matter), he hit the ground running. I was able to catch four 1999 shows and all were from very good to great. I saw the Chicago/Indy shows back to back. I think by the end of the summer for the Pine Knob show, it seemed like Dickey was kind of letting if you will, Derek to sort of step out. In the early summer shows it was like all Dickey for the guitar work.

Again, thanks for posting!

Yes, great show and thanks for posting. I saw the Indy show as well, but the one thing that really stands out for me is seeing Dickey playing a Fender Strat instead of a Gibson or PSR. Would sure like to know why he choose that guitar during that time period? And yes, Derek is just coming in his own at that point. Look at him now!

@rcgp2020 Dickey was playing a Fender Strat the first 3 or 4 times I saw the band in 1970. Then by summer of 1970 Dickey was playing an SG. When Dickey shifted to several Les Pauls until he found one he really liked at a Pawn Shop in Manhattan, the famous 1957 Goldie, he gave the SG to Duane for slide so Duane wouldn't need to retune.

Dickey played Goldie through 1994 when he suddenly shifted to a Paul Reed Smith. In one interview Dickey said all the years of smoke and sweat had taken a toll on his favorite Les Paul. Warren had a couple of Paul Reed Smith guitars so I figured that influenced Dickey to change not only guitars but brands. But later in another interview Dickey said he quit using his Les Paul because he was tired of Gibson ignoring him. Not sure what was up with that.

But apparently the Paul Reed Smith wasn't exactly what Dickey wanted because the next year he had an ES-335 dot neck. And it's a Gibson. So I figured he wasn't mad at Gibson any longer. But the next year  for the next 3 or 4 years Dickey mostly played a Fender Strat. I read Dickey had an old 1956 hard tail Strat supposedly for certain rhythm playing in the studio. I assume it was being irritated at Gibson was WHY  Dickey was playing a Strat.  Dickey even had hot rail pickups installed in the neck position of the two Strats he used in the ABB and according to Duane Betts it was to make them sound more like a Gibson. Why not just play a Gibson?

Gibson finally came out with a Dickey Betts signature Les Paul Goldtop in 2001 so he certainly wasn't being ignored then. Duane Betts uses it as his main guitar now. Duane Betts also uses Dickey's old 1956 hard tail Strat on two songs in Allman Betts Band now and I was close to those guitars in Blacksburg, Virginia early last year and it doesn't look like it in the video posted here but when you get close to Dickey's old 1956 hard tail Strat, it has some serious road wear on it. Neck and the top of the body. Someone years ago played the crap out of that guitar a lot for years.

Dickey's early guitar hero was Dave Lyle of Florida who played Strats often and so did Larry Reinhart of the Second Coming. Maybe that is where he got his Strats. But the Strat Dickey gave to Eddy Shaver which Eddy was still using at his death, was an old 1955 Strat Dickey is said to have picked up when he traded an old car he had to Gregg Allman who then owned the guitar. Dickey also gave Eddy ...Duane Allman's ES-335 but Eddy didn't use it much. Supposedly Willie Nelson has both guitars in his safe now.

Here is the late Eddy Shaver. Dickey taught him how to play lead guitar and gave him the guitar he is playing here. And that second solo has Dickey Betts written all over it. That boy is really doing a Dickey thing!!!

@robertdee, thanks so much for the history lesson. I knew someone would be able to point out the different guitars and manufactories that Dickey Betts has used in his career so far. And yes I agree with you that the guitar work on Eddie Shavers song sounds just like Dickey would have played it.
