Tedeschi TrucksBand - Don't Drift Away

Will they be releasing a version of Made Up Mind with this song sometime? A single track on iTunes? Such a good song. Why hold it back?

It was a bonus MP3 download if you bought "Mind Made Up" from the TTB website.
You're right, great song.

This is a really nice version of Don't Drift Away. I wish they would make recordings of their live shows available.

I have loved this song since I first heard it at Wanee a few years ago. It was written in time to be included on Revelator but for some reason Derek and Susan thought it was just an "OK" song. It was one of Chris Trucks favorite songs and both he and I lobbied them to release it. It's a song that could have come out in the 70's. A perfect example of some of Derek's R&B influence from that era. I believe Doyle had a hand in this song as well...

Thank you for lobbying to release this JNB! I am completely bewitched by the soothing vocals and rhythm of this song and thought exactly the same thing when I first heard it: this song could have come out in the '70s. A lot of times when I hear TTB I feel like there is something out of whack with the space time continuum in that they sound like a band that should have played at Woodstock and been around in the late 60s early 70s in particular. Lucky for us they are here now. In looking at some of the youtubes of this song I wonder if it is a little tricky to play in standard tuning and sing at the same time. Maybe that has something to do with it? I don't know but its a phenomenal song.
Thanks again for lobbying for this one and mark me down as one more of their fans who thinks this is one of their best songs.
.... it also occurs to me that I have heard Rolling Stones apparently thought Satisfaction was "not the best song" and almost didn't release it until someone talked them in to it.

Don't Drift Away is among TTB's 2-5 best songs without question for me, and would have been the second best song on Revelator. Instant classic. They totally wiffed on deciding to park this song.
I think the first version I heard at Wanee was the best...it had a better arrangement on the outtro among Derek & background singers (who were Mike & Javier that night). I will say that I thought they went a little bit "adult contemporary" on the production on the studio version (same with Midnight in Harlem). Here's that original take:
Interesting, one of the other "instant classic" TTB songs, "Part of Me," is out of favor with the band and not a part of their live shows any more. Hearing Midnight in Harlem & Part of Me back to back at Wanee 2014 was the best 15 minutes of live music I heard that entire year.

"It's a song that could have come out in the 70's."

Completely agree. My TTB playlist starts with
Part Of Me
All That I Need
Don't Drift Away
To my ears, these 3 together have the feel of 70's R & B songs, and flow very well.

All That I Need is one of my favorites as well. Great 70s groove.
Part of Me a classic too.
SOME of my favorites:
Midnight In Harlem
Don't Drift Away
Idle Wind
Miss Understood
Whiskey Legs
Love has something else to say
Learn how to love you
Wade in the water
Come see about me
Break in the Road
I've got a feeling
Lots more but that's some of my favorites

Agreed, Don't Drift Away is one of their best songs. Think they missed the boat by not including that song and "Look Around" on either of the first 2 records:
2 minutes 10 seconds in-
Musically and lyrically it reminds me a bit of "Castles Made of Sand."
"All That I Need" is a favorite as well. Sounds like something that could have been on Clapton's 461 Ocean Boulevard album.

I love "Do I Look Worried to You" and "The Storm" as well.

Look Around! Why was this not released as well? I do hear a lot of Hendrix in there, Angel in particular, and a touch of Jorma. Great song!
My favorite (so far) versions of Do I Look Worried is the one from Bonnaroo 2014. Killer.

Great call on Look Around. One of their best tunes and surely would have elevated Revalator (it wasn't as if they were against slower & midtempo tunes on that record...can't name one better that made the cut other than Harlem). I've enjoyed Look Around over the years listening to tapes of Wanee 2010 and kind of forgot it hadn't been officially released. I think the only time I heard it played was that that 2010 Wanee show linked. Maybe they will include it next time out....
I will say that even though the horn section wasn't in place yet, they absolutely floored us at their Wanee 2010 debut. We had heard non of these new songs and the covers were ones that neither the dTb or Susan solo had performed. We were slack jawwed that night. They played a packed house Mushroom Stage ampitheatre for about 2 hours starting at about 12:15. Normally, I'd be warn out by then but they held our attention.
They've hit out of the park at others shows since then too, but there is something about the first time.
