I lean to the Mule side of the family.

As I used to say here, I'd rather have my ass kicked by the Mule than bored to sleep by DTB.

Or now TTB.

I like 'em! They carry no torch but their own. The ABB were at their best a dual lead guitar attack with some great characters blending their own take on blues, R&B, and a splash of soul. I appreciate them because they're showing a roots rock band can draw big on the concert circuit. I'm hoping this encourages more artists to develop music and quality bands. I enjoy their concerts much more than their albums. I love it when Derek cuts loose & hope he's making music long after I'm boots up.

I do appreciate a lot of what they do. I like the big band concept with horns and backup singers. When they are really hitting the note it is such a powerful sound.

I have been listening to a lot of DTB since Kofi passed, and overall I think I prefer that band. Especially and specifically from about 2002 to 2005, that version of DTB will always be one of my favorite bands. I like long instrumentals and jazz/Eastern tunes.

I love Mule and liked DTB a lot but TTB isn’t my thing.
To say they carry the torch for the Allmans is not so IMO.
The Allmans,other than a few exceptions,had some of the finest musicians in
Music. TTB,besides Derek,are not on the same planet,musically,with the Brothers.
They are a nice concept and it’s important that their very real music is around-just not my taste and certainly they have nothing to do with the Allmans any more than Mule music has to do with the Allmans.
Are they blazing musical trails? IMO no way-they are doing covers and very weak original material. But again,as a concept it’s better they are around doing their thing. Can’t wait for Derek to do some new projects.

I appreciate the TTB immensely. They're authentic, work in service of the music and have a broad appeal, which to me is really important to have in this world. I would say they carry their own torch moulded substantially by others before them.

I'm more of the DTB contingent that loves the long instrumentals and Eastern flair, as well, and as a result I suffer from too-much-Susan effect.

Gave the new album a full listen and like it overall, but don't love it yet.

The 2 best songs imo are Strengthen What Remains and Still Your Mind ---- common denominator being only some combo of Mattison, Derek and Kofi wrote them. 2 really fresh, unique sounding tunes that can be taken places.

Going forward I'm hoping Mike and Derek do more of the writing and invite the new players to contribute, as well.

They are my favorite live band out there. I prefer their variety and sense of dynamics to what I had been getting from the ABB or from the Mule.

The ABB had / has the superior song catalogue IMO.

I did not really like Susan's solo work that I had heard; however, I think she has improved immensely to the point that she is one of my favorite living singers now.

the challenge with TTB will be - at least on this board - will be their comparison to the ABB.

my feeling will always be this: if derek trucks in playing anywhere close to me, i'm making every effort to go.

also, derek has played with, toured with, recorded with and guested with music's royalty. if he is happy and feels challenged by TTB, then that says something. it might not be for all ears, but as they've said and sang, they've got a made up mind, so let them get by if you're in the way.

You might be on to something Tony. Much like Donald Trump, two people can listen to the same speech... one hears lies and malice, the other hears truth and promise.

Not a bad analogy, absnj, although a fact-checker can cure one of those problems.

I think it goes back to expectations. People want the Derek that they want; Derek is not always going to give them that. Miles Davis presented the same challenge to his listeners. King Crimson did the same thing too.

I gave a friend of mine this advice regarding expectations before giving him the new TTB CD:

"I know you want Alvin Lee, but you're getting Al Green."

I'm enjoying the new disc more with each spin as I understand it more for what it is, rather than missing its intent by focusing on what it is not.

I got the new cd today and played it - so only 1 listen - I liked it ..... need more listens

What was interesting was that I then put on Marcus King Band Carolina Confessions - and my wife said 'Is this another TTB album?' . After listening, they sounded very similar.........

I would pay to hear Derek play songs from Mother Goose, but that's me - I never saw Duane, Jimi, or SRV. I did see Clapton and Beck (an Dickey) among others and by far Derek is the best one I've seen. Other than Duane and Jimi the best one I've heard

I find it interesting that people criticize TTB (and also ABB) for playing covers - have not heard the same criticism of Mule but they play there fair share.

I like Derek and Susan and the Mule. I got hooked on the ABB in 1970 and enjoyed a lot of original lineup shows. After Duane and Berry passed on NONE of the later lineups had the same vide and energy as the original lineup
I enjoyed a number of the Chuck and Larmar line up shoes. The Warren Woody lineup, especially in the early 90s, was real hot with lots of energy and Gregg, Dickey, Butch and Jaimoe were bringing it but it still wasn't the same vibe I got from the original.

The last line up was real good technically but seemed more removed from the authentic ABB vibe than the Chuck and Lamar band. Probably because the front line only had Gregg left and Gregg once commented on it feeling strange to be the only one left on the front line. That he had to look back to see an original brother.

And I've never felt Gregg solo, Dickey solo, Mule or TTB was carrying on the ABB torch. But I enjoy the musicians who have been with the ABB alot and Derek is especially good and I can hear Duane in his style. The ABB for me was over, if I'm honest, in 1972. Then what continued ended in 2014. When I go see Clapton or Santana or Derek and Susan or Warren, Im going to hear some good musicians. Not to feel that special religious vibe and energy I got everytime I saw the original six. Maybe Im getting too old

I'm looking forward to the Allman Betts Band. I'm sure Midnight Rider and Blue Sky will be fun and good. But if I get to see them perform, I'm not going in thinking it's going to feel like the original Allman Brothers. I have to play Fillmore East or Eat A Peach to get that kind of feeling. It's like there is only one woman that brings it all to your emotions.

The original poster used the word "cathartic" very accurately, and I think it applies to both the band and the crowd. More than most bands I have seen in the past few decades, TTB builds a great vibe, with lots of peak experiences. Dickey was very good at building solos that did that; the Dead also had an intelligence about building a set to create a really powerful vibe in the crowd so that you felt like you were riding a wave.

Obviously, much of this is the goal of any band that jams, but the TTB really seems to hit that note.

They are indeed torchbearers, that doesn't mean copy band lol.

Interesting discussion. I am a fan of TTB and all things Derek. I am really getting into the new disc and there are at least 5 songs that will be staples for me. I know this isn't for everyone and respect that. For example Mule bores me to tears and sounds repetitive to my ears, but that's me. I for one see growth in the band and don't miss the DTB much if at all. Listen to what you like and enjoy, but always remember someone likes what you don't and respect that.

I'm disappointed with the new CD, especially after 3 years. I'm sorry, but the song writing is just not very good and I think they are a great band. Nothing else out there has their 'power' in a live show currently. It is a credit to them to play so well with such mediocre material.

I too revisited the DTB band after Kofi. It just reinforced my stance that I want more Derrik and more Mike M. on these TTB albums. I wish Susan and Mike would take 50/50 leads. I mostly miss those Derrick solo's that slowly build and just hit that prefect crescendo with your arm hairs standing on end. Sorry, but their albums just don't do that for me.
