The greatest super group no one knows about - crank some STUFF for Friday!

Stuff was a New York-based jazz funk band whose members were Gordon Edwards (bass), Richard Tee (keyboards), Eric Gale (guitar), Cornell Dupree (guitar), Chris Parker (drums), and later Steve Gadd (drums).

Great stuff!  Most of those guys became Paul Simons sidemen for a spell.

@rusty Paul Simon was a regular around SNL, I imagine this is where he took notice. First Clapton steels Joe Cocker's backing band, then Paul Simon.

A for those who don't recognize Cornell Dupree, he was King Curtis' guitarist. He shared the stage with the ABB twice when they invited KC's Kingpins to the Beacon stage - https://www.munck-music.com/products/abb-2009-03-23

That is Steve Gadd in the 59:45 minute set I just watched wasn't it? Live at Montreux 1976?

They are terrific!!

About 1980 someone in the press ask Buddy Rich, self proclaimed world's greatest drummer, were there any cats playing now you like. And Buddy said Steve Gadd was real good. Buddy had recently been negative about John Bonham, Ginger Baker and rock drummers in general. Most of them don't know how to hold their sticks right.

@robertdee I LOVE Buddy Rich, but he could be a bit of a crank.  He seemed to think that besides himself and Gene Krupa, nobody else in the world could play drums.  He was amazing, but I ignore some of his comments on other musicians.

I suppose there are "proper" ways/methods for holding drumsticks.  I can spot a drummer who was in the marching band in a nano-second!  Guitarists vary on how they use a pick - or if they use one at all.  I took viola (Orchestra) for several years (middle school).  Violinists are taught to hold their bow with this weird, dainty, pinky-extended method.  But there are some bodacious fiddle players who grab it like a socket wrench and do just fine.  That stuff is just technique!

@rusty Cool stuff!:) Yeah I figured out that is Steve Gadd playing drums with The Stuff in 1976. I thought it looked like Steve albeit much younger than he was when I saw Steve several years ago. And to please Buddy Rich, Steve is using traditional grip. Buddy himself is on YouTube playing MATCHED grip like John Bonham, Ginger Baker, Butch Trucks and dozens more. When Buddy would flip his sticks around and play with the handles or fat end he would go to matched grip himself for some reason.

The Stuff is such a great group of very good musicians. All very accomplished and polished. It is a pleasure to listen to them. Enjoying my Friday morning!!

Oh man ! I never thought I would see a thread like this . Thankyou so much PorkchopBob for starting it.

Since aprox the mid 1980's I have been obsessed by the group Stuff and it's individual members . They are my favourite band , along with the ABB of course. )

I embarked on a policy to get not only the Stuff LPs but also all of the members solo LPs and also any LP on which a member played on !  ( this runs into the hundreds ,  if not thousands.) Consequently I have everything from John Lennon's " Mind Games ",  ( Gordon Edwards plays bass ) to Barbara Streisand's " ' Guilty"  (- Cornell Dupree plays guitar .)

I have met four of them in person. Richard Tee, Steve Gadd , Cornell Dupree and Gordon Edwards  who invited me to his apartment  in NYC on my only visit there in 1993 for an afternoon's conversation. I also spent a Sat. night in 1992 sitting at a table in a jazz club here in Sydney Australia watching the house band and sharing a bottle of Dewars scotch with Cornell Dupree on his night off.

All of them were extremely humble and modest and just really pleased to meet a fan who really got their music. Backstage after the second night of the Paul Simon " Rhythm of the Saints _" tour ( on which Richard Tee was the MD ) at the 12,000 seat Sydney Entertainment Centre Steve Gadd actually said to me " I think the Tuesday night show was better than the Monday night show . I was a bit sick on Monday night. What did you you think , John  ? " I was speechless as both nights were epic.

And there is an ABB connection . Some famous journalist for Rolling Stone or somesuch whose name escapes me once wrote regarding the guitar interplay between Eric Gale and Cornell Dupree in Stuff was comparable to the playing of Duane Allman and Dickey Betts in the ABB.

@midnightvwdriver  I had never heard of The Stuff until Porkchopbob linked them yesterday. It's all I listened to yesterday and last night. Got it on this morning too but cut it off to get up and get some coffee started. And check in here. Fantastic musicians.

I decided to see where they are today as Steve Gadd is the only one I remember hearing the name and I saw Gadd some years ago. Gadd was the ONLY younger drummer the late Buddy Rich would brag about. Sad to learn all but Gadd and the bass player, who is 83, have passed on.

Thank you so much Porkchopbob for the assist in discovering The Stuff.

@midnightvwdriver that’s awesome. The band is so in the pocket. Cornell Dupree is one of my top 5 favorite guitarists, he’s got a slinky funky style all his own, so I was a Stuff fan as soon as I heard about them. Definitely a great rabbit hole to go down.

Robert Dee . You must be very musically aware and tuned in as from my experience Stuff are kinda too subtle to appeal to the average music listener. You should get the  "Stuff  Live at Montreux  DVD " which is still available I think , from Amazon. Its great.

Also Chris Parker (  drums ) is still with us. Stuff , like the ABB , were a two drummer band. Chris played with Paul Butterfield prior to Stuff and with many others after . Such as Bob Dylan .

@porkchopbob Rabit hole indeed. In my collection I even have Cornell Dupree guitar instruction VHS tape and I don't even play guitar !

One story  I can relate to you from my nights spent with him  ;  Cornell was on the road with Aretha Franklin for some years  playing the song " Love the one you're with " night after night. In our night sharing a table I commented that Stephen Stills wrote that song.  Cornell was incredulous. He did not know that. He seemed genuinely surprised when I mentioned that.

Also I was surprised that of all his 2,500 sessions he rated his Barbara Streisand " Guilty " LP as a highlight. He said that Barry Gibb ( Bee Gees  ) who produced it was a master of melodies and he was a sucker for melodies. He also liked country music for the same reason.

@midnightvwdriver  Thank you. I'm going to order that show from 1976.

I have heard this 1970 hit a million times and loved the warn tender guitar and now I know it was Cornell.

A fantastic band, absolutely loved them!! We saw them at least twice at The Bottom Line, NYC in the mid-late 1970's.
