Spotify

dang it now i gotta download the spotify app!

This is a great thread and I'm enjoying all of the comments and opinions.
I am a hardcore user of Napster. The cost is 10 bucks a month and I couldn't comprehend giving it up even at gunpoint. I have downloaded over 50,000 songs and spend hours every day listening to them, rating them, cleaning up punctuation and spelling errors, checking AllMusic and other sources so I can code any featured artists and/or studio musicians that appear on the songs. The songs that I really like end up in playlists that I use when I'm hiking and working out. Every artist has his/her individual playlist sorted by album date. I must have 6 or 7 hundred playlists.
I have spent much more money on concerts since I started this hobby 4 years ago because I get hooked on an artist and start checking their website for concert schedules. In the last month or two I've seen Lucero, Drive By Truckers, Lydia Loveless & Nikki Lane. Napster is what drove me to these artists. I have dozens of other artists I want to see when they come to the Pacific Northwest.
I'm fortunate to be retired and have the time to do this. It's a wonderful hobby. I have 3 160GB I-Pods. I always have one of them on me. I can't imagine working out or hiking without one. Eventually, I'll force myself to buy a phone and load my music on it. I sold technology for a living and swore I'd never own another cell phone when I retired. Been without one for 5 years and rarely miss having one.
Canadian Mule I'm going to check out Jasen Colson tonight. I look forward to listening to you.

I can't be responsible for that. LOL - although you should. For the Spotify-less people among us - here you go. Can't post up the same tunes right now as I don't want to affect Jasen's millions in sales. 😉 But here are a couple of treats that I posted in another thread that you may have missed. Filmed on an Pad so the video and audio are what they are. Also my dear wife enjoys filming with the IPad upside down so she got the table in the shot. LOL - still love her. Not the greatest quality but you get the idea.
Jasen rambles a bit so the tune starts at about 1:08 in.
She Is Oh So
Take Me To The Pilot
Hope that saved our dear friend BrerRabbit from the app monster.
😉

Just a playlist of some stuff I've heard recently

Some interesting tunes, Issac. Some that I have not heard of before.
To me that is a big selling point to Spotify. New artists that can gain exposure that they wouldn't get through radio or conventional avenues.

Agreed though I normally read about a lot of new artist I check out. I plan to keep updating that list with songs that I like. Trying to decide if I want to keep it short or just let it grow.

Napster still exists?!?!?! 😮
I remember when Napster came out when I was like 9 or 10 and we had dial-up internet access.
MOM - "Anthony, I need to use the phone!!"
ME - "Hold on! This song only has 45 minutes left to download!!"
..and that was for a 3 minute song, imagine trying to download a WP->Mt Jam, you would be there ALL day!
Constant arguments, needless to say.

LOL
I remember downloading a boxset that was scrapped and never released. It took 3-4 days to get it all.
Now you just have to click.
Govt Mule's new song Sarah Surrender is on Spotify.
Surprised that the most listened to Mule song is Life On The Outside by quite a large margin.

Likewise, I have wondered the same thing several times. I figured Soulshine would take top spot as it is the most "radio" friendly IMO.

I do use it sometimes. It's cool to listen to playlists that people post from time to time. But when it comes to purchasing music, I want it to be a physical object.

Figured it out. LOL
One of the acts that I currently play with Jasen Colson. Our latest single release.
Hard Love Livin'
B-Side of the single as if there are still B-Sides still. Although we are printing some 45s.
Roll Me is below -link won't work for some reason.
I also play on 5 or 6 songs from his album on there as well. All over the map musically but fun.

Curous if anyone gave it a listen? LOL 😛

Napster did not have it which was surprising.
I've used Spotify, Google Music & I-Tunes. I have a strong preference for Napster but that's probably because I've used it for 5-6 years and am used to it.
My guess is that Amazon, MSFT, Google, Apple or Spotify buys it within 12-18 months for the subscription list. Therefore, if I was going to try a music service I would use the other providers mentioned above. Napster is owned by Real Networks and won't be able to compete long term vs the giants.

If you can swing the $9.99 per month, Spotify is the deal especially if you want to take your music with. I have replicated some box sets that I wanted by simply making playlists of the songs included in the box.

I just use the free version but $10 is something that I would pay if I needed to download the tunes.

I hear you and agree Jules but I feel that the results of the current state of the music are positive and negative. As the tradition music industry has taken a hit, it has driven people back to seeing their local musicians. Live music is thriving here with virtually most bars/pubs having some form of live music. Ten years ago, it was all just a DJ or music service piped in.
I support musicians as I am one. I do have to be honest that over the years working in music, I got a lot of free music. Program director - I had a pile of music sent to me daily. Record company - I got everything handed to me.
Same thing for shows, I have seen thousands and the majority I saw for free.
But as the industry fell apart, it opened up things for the local players as now some of that money ends up in their pockets. I have friends that are again playing without needing a second (real) job. Just being a musician for a living which hasn't been the case for a long time. It even brought me out and back playing the clubs which I had soured on years ago. I am even picking up studio work which had almost completely dried up. Great paying studio work? No. But enough to make me happy.
So many people just recording independently and succeeding at selling their product. Not sales in the millions but sales they would not have had under the old regime. And cash from those sales actually going to the artist. That was rarely the case under the tradition system. Artists would rarely see cash unless it sold in the millions.
I prefer to pay a cover at the door and support local players that need the cash as opposed to going and giving Mick Jagger more money. In general, those really expensive tickets are for artists that made and snorted away millions and want to refill their accounts. Sure costs have risen and touring is higher but those insane prices are pure greed.
Positive effect from things like Spotify is that it gives people a chance to hear your music and experiment. Before you would generally just flip by an artist that you didn't know. Now you can click and give it a chance.
Pros and cons.
Can't go to the local store and buy the CD anymore - they closed those stores and the ones left are on the verge of closing. Musicians have to go with the flow or just perish.
I find music is thriving but in a different way.
Love the local scene.
Nothing really close to me but we regularly go to Syracuse to Funk N Waffles.
First show we saw there two years ago was Devon Allman.
Then we saw Victor Wainwright and our friend Pat harrington sat in and actually landed a job in the band.
The best show we saw last year (out of a bunch of shows including three Mule shows) was Walter Trout.
In January we saw Slam Allen there.
Most of these shows are $15-25 and the venue holds about 150 SRO.
One nice feature is we get off the interstate, make one left turn, drive three blocks and the parking lot is right there, cross the street to the club.
Nothing like easy in, easy out and we're home by 11 p.m.
I'll have to check out Spotify, I know nothing about it other than wott I read in the first few posts.
(Dinosaur here as well)
