That's a GREAT choice, and I don't even own the Townes version (the original). The sad tale of a prostitute and her fate. It's Steve Earle's version on Train A' Comin' that really gets me. And thank you for mentioning that, haven't played that record in quite a while, it's now out of the CD rack. One of my top two Steve Earle records. Of course Earle was very heavily influenced by Townes.
Stormy Monday.........as sung by Gregg of course........it's brought tears to my eyes so many, many times. So many different great versions out there but Fillmore East being the definitive version. 2009 Beacon with Clapton is another version that's WAY over the top.
Warren Zevon's "Carmelita" is another. A junkie crying out with the pain of his hopeless addiction. If you've ever heard the song, you know that Zevon must have been speaking from experience, his pain sounds so real. I heard Jackson Browne do this one live 5 years ago in Berkeley. You could have heard a pin drop in the 10,000 seat amphitheatre.
Here's Townes Van Zandt doing Tecumseh Valley:

It Makes No Difference- The Band
Such a cool thread, ties us all together in a way.
I love this song for the haunting lyrics that Rick sings and that he is no longer with us. A few more that you might like.
Color Him Father by The Winstons
America - Version played by Yes
Photograph - Ringo Starr
Of course all of these are special to me, but I suppose that's the point of this thread.
By the way, thanks for posting this thread. The music that we care about is the tie that binds us all together.

another vote for Ripple
also
Brokedown Palace - GD
In My Life - Beatles

Great topic!
I could, and maybe will, add more but I recently went to a reunion concert by the surviving members of Fotheringay, the band founded by the late Sandy Denny post Fairport Convention.
I had been working my way through the recently published biography of Sandy and when Kathryn Roberts sang Solo, I couldn't stop the tears rolling down my cheeks!
The rest of the gig I was fine - but that song just got to me.
