"Judging" from your taste: check out a band called "Over The Rhine".
YouTube or google: "Ohio" (not the NY song) or "When I Go" for examples.
They invented the expression "getting goosebumps" just for songs like these!
Cheers & Keep Save!

Joni Mitchell
Carole King
Patti Smith
Sarah Jarosz
Hope Sandoval

just checked out ohio by over the rhine..thanks for tip....good stuff

I don't really know who counts as a singer/songwriter and who doesn't, but: Neko Case. She writes great songs, I love her voice and I can listen to something of hers any time.

Laura Marling
Anna Burch
Gillian Welch
Molly Tuttle

Brandi Carlile
Tift Merritt
Kacey Musgraves

Laura Nyro, probably the best of her era
Laura Nyro & Duane Allman ~ Beads Of Sweat 1970

Bobbie Gentry, she could do it all, write, perform, produce, manage her career. Not to mention she was beautiful.

Thanks for the promo on Bobbie Gentry. Like most, I was only familiar with "Ode To Billie Joe" great song, but I never looked under the hood. Checking out her albums today, hit this one, "Delta Sweete", the follow up to her smash debut "Ode To Billie Joe". man "Delta Sweete" is a great record:

I used to be a big fan of Gillian Welch and Dave Rawlings.
Six great albums, albeit over 15 years, have been followed by a nine-year drought, as far as I'm concerned. Just one further album of out-takes, demos and alternate versions in that time.
Their last show as Gillian Welch in the UK was also in 2011 and was rapturously received.
No new product, no live shows - they can't really complain about their fans losing interest.

Delta Sweete is a good one, I like all of her albums, especially the Fancy album, recorded at Fame with Rick Hall producing. And I love the song.

Tambourine by Tift Merritt is an incredible album in my opinion. My favorite of hers.

Carly Simon is always missing from these lists. She & Judy Collins were story-tellers more than singers but I liked listening to their stories.

Tambourine by Tift Merritt is an incredible album
Saw her do that one live at 3rd and Lindsley in 2004 - excellent, ultra hi energy show. Her Nashville session lead guitar hired gun was way too loud and an obscene showboater though, awful. Flashville Trashville. Nashville.

X2, & in all those respects I would add Emmylou Harris & Linda Ronstadt - Talented successful career musicians, & beautiful
Will have to check out that Bobbie Gentry link - OTBJo never gets old - yep she helped popularize that beehive ‘do alright

Alison krause! love her.

Good call, & Grace Potter came to mind upon seeing it - great stage presence & band, this thread is remiss w/out our own Susan - a great great musician as we all know

Mercury Rev with some of today's female singers put out a great tribute to the Delta Sweete album.

I am a huge Linda Ronstadt fan,but in regards to the thread,Linda was not a song writer. She may have co-wrote 3 or 4 songs, but that was it.
Talented, successful and beautiful I could not agree more.

Gillian & Dave have focused on Dave's career over the past decade, with 3 albums of new material since the end of 2009. I've seen 3 Dave Rawlings Machine shows since then (where Dave takes the majority of lead vocals) and they have been glorious (the one with John Paul Jones on mandolin & barritone harmony vocals was easily at Top 10 ever show for me......I wish they'd release an official live album from that tour). And I've see 1 gig billed as Gillian in that time was that was great too.
You are right that new Gillian material has been sparse.

The phenomenal Ruthie Foster

I think Fiona Apple's first album is one of the most amazing albums from the past few decades. Her phrasing is really unique - she has some jazz inflections and smokiness but draws some cadence and syncopation from hip-hop.
The rhythmic quality of her songs is wild too. Lots of unique sounds and studio madness.
I'll echo the vote for Susan. She has really grown into a powerhouse.

The new Fiona Apple is getting rave reviews. I thought it was a pretty good listen.

Mindy Smith's voice always makes me cry

Do yourself a favor and take a listen to Joan Shelley's new live album. She is one of the best!
