GS Ritchie how did you come up with the iconic opening for Smoke On The Water ?
RBlackmore: The Allman Brothers had released a live LP titled At Fillmore East. It was the first time I'd opened my ears to those chaps when Ian was playing the record. A live record I thought how bungish , but it turns out it sold millions and we ( Deep Purple ) came to a conlusion that we need to do a live record disc . I was listening to some song, The Elizabethean Reed Memoirs and loved the melodic guitar line. I was working on harmony on the lower strings and made a slip up and luckily I was recording it. I moved my positioning down a full step. Thats how Smoke On The Water was born.
GS So you're saying that an Allman Brothers song was the model for the opening guitar riff of Smoke On The Water ?
RBlackmore: Bloody lucky we haven't been paying royalties to Dickey Betts for all these years.

Google search shows nothing pertaining to this being legit.
