Sometimes I hear a really, REALLY good record and I end up with mixed emotions.  Joy because this record is full of joy.  Sadness because it came out in 2008 and I know that in large part it has nearly completely escaped the public's eye.  Such is the sad state of radio these days.  I have only owned it for a year or so myself.

I really REALLY mean this:  This is one of the best Soul records I have EVER heard, and once it gets in my stereo it will stay there for three listens, sometimes more.  There is just not one weak cut on this record.

Scrapomatic is Mike Mattison:  Vocals and Paul Olsen:  Guitars, vocals.  The two co-wrote three tunes but mostly they contributed about equally with their own individual tunes.  The songwriting is absolutely brilliant.  I've always loved Mike Mattison's singing and he's great throughout here.

I just cannot give this one a higher recommendation.  If anyone has suggestions on the next Scrapomatic record I should get, please fess up.  I highly suggest picking this one up if you don't have it.  You will be pleasantly surprised.  Congrats to Mike and Paul for making something really REALLY good.  It was HIGH time I got around to giving this record a plug!

Additional musicians:  Dave Yoke:  Guitars, Ted Pecchio:  Bass, vocals, Tyler Greenwell:  Drums, percussion, Count M'Butu:  Percussion, Tracks 2 &11, Derek Trucks, Lead guitar, Tracks 1 & 4.  Produced by Mike Mattison and Jeff Bakos.  Executive Producers:  Michael Rothschild and Blake Budney.

SCRAPOMATIC:  Sidewalk Caesars

1.  He Called My Name (Mattison)

2.  Drink House (Olsen)

3.  Killing Yourself On Purpose (Olsen/Ben Fisher)

4.  I Want The Truth (Mattison)

6.  Long Gone (Mattison)

7.  Hook, Line And Sinker (Olsen)

8.  The Fire Next Time (Olsen)

9.  The Old Whiskey Show (Mattison)

10.  Drunken Spree (Mattison/Olsen)

11.  Long-Haired State (Olsen)

I saw them on New Year's Weekend in 2005 at The Variety Playhouse in Atlanta. They opened one night for Susan and then the dTb. I think it was the 30th but it could have been the 31st. Gregg played on a couple of tunes on New Year's Eve.

Anyway, they are good. Very much soul music. I really wish Mike Mattison would get more notice in The TTB.

I just found this review by Hal Horowitz at allmusic.com:

Three releases in, Scrapomatic's core/founding duo -- singer Mike Mattison and guitarist/singer Paul Olsen -- finds its elusive groove by refusing to be typecast as a blues band. While blues remains at their core, Mattison and Olsen revel in the nooks, crannies, and extremities. They mix and match styles, even within the same tune, to encompass rustic acoustic folk, country, soul, R&B, swamp, roots rock, gospel, and even a hint of '80s punk-pop. Despite the group's eclectic nature, this is its most focused set yet. As if to assert their independence, Mattison and Olsen have replaced veteran producer John Snyder, who worked on Scrapomatic's first two discs. Mattison and engineer/mixer Jeff Bakos are co-producers here, and they keep the sound raw yet commercially viable. Olsen takes a few lead vocals, most noticeably on his closing ballad, "Good Luck with Your Impossible Dream," but it's Mattison's soulful, malleable rasp that jumps out of the speakers. He can be sweet or salty, mournful or magnanimous, innocent or intense, and he uses his remarkable range, sometimes sliding into falsetto, to express the emotional core of these often lyrically obtuse songs. There are spiritual overtones in the jaunty "The Fire Next Time" and "He Called My Name," but the themes seem to question religion rather than promote it. Drinking is also a recurring motif ("Drink House," "The Old Whiskey Show," "Drunken Spree"), but more in a descriptive sense. Mattison calls in boss Derek Trucks to add some of his distinctive snaky slide guitar lines on two tracks, which in the case of "I Want the Truth" helps push the song into Southern rock territory with more than a touch of gospel. The set rolls, rocks, sways, and lurches, and is never predictable, with some tunes changing tempos and groove within their conservative playing times. An obscurity from '80s punk-popper Robert Hazard, "I Just Wanna Hang Around with You," rides an uptempo catchy riff, and even though it's the disc's most energetic moment, slots into the unpredictably rootsy flow. Drop the laser anywhere in these 13 cuts and you'll not only land on a winner, but a tune you'll likely return to in order to peel back its lyrics and hum along with its melody. That's the sign of a successful album, and with Sidewalk Caesars Mattison and Olsen have captured their diverse influences in original tunes that pulse with authority, conviction, and -- above all -- personality.

Fantastic record.  For a deeper dive, check out Mike Mattison solo records.  I would recommend You Can’t Fight Love and Afterglow.

Sidewalk Caesars is a fine album. Just one thing, Dave Yolk is the guitar player. An easy name to confuse. Please understand Robslob, I mean no disrespect! Dave has undergone an interesting career, he was a member of STB for a few years and most recently played in Dr. John's band for a few years until Dr. John's death. He is a fine player!

@owencarol:  Corrected.  No offense taken whatsoever in fact I appreciate anyone correcting me if I get the name of a musician wrong........they deserve better!  Question:  You said he was a member of STB.  I assume STB is an acronym?  If so I have no idea what band it stands for.

I saw them open for Soul Stew in 2008, they were very good. I had tix to see them Spring of 2020 but it got cancelled

I’m pretty sure Yolk was the guitar player for Susan’s band (STB). I saw him play with her - think it was 2009. He’s very good. If I remember correctly he played a  SG without a pick.

A great release with Mike Mattison on it is the DVD The dTb recorded at Park West in Chicago in January 2006 I believe. That was a fun show. I think it was right after the CD Songlines came out. Fun night.

@robslob Sorry I just saw your response to my post. STB is the Susan Tedeschi Band. His confidence increased dramatically from when I first saw him with her. He became a favorite of my wife and I with his soulful licks. In some respects he plays a lot like Derek. Understated but blissful. No showmanship, just a fine player.

I love Scrapomatic, they've got some great material.

I also love Dave Yoke's playing, at times similar to Derek since they both finger pick on an SG. Saw him in a lineup of Butch's Freight Train band opposite Vaylor Trucks at Wanee and it was phenomenal. Mike's solo album from a few years ago is pretty great too, features Dave Yoke as well.

speaking of Scrap, I actually animated one of their music videos - Mike is a cool cat.

Let's get the name of the guitar player correct once and for all!  Porkchopbob is the only one who had it right:  Dave Yoke.  I originally said Dave York.  Owencarol said you're wrong, it's Dave Yolk.  Then porkchop listed him as Dave Yoke.  So I checked the credits on the CD case.  It's Dave Yoke.

Oh and by the way:  Dave Yoke sounds SMOKING hot on the video that porkchop posted.  Nice animation work, too (musician credits are at the end).

Not Scrap, but Mike and Dave do a great "Midnight in Harlem" (Mike co-wrote the song)

A sample for you in case you've never heard the record.  Hook, Line and Sinker is a Paul Olsen tune and it's my favorite one on the record.

Susan often gets overlooked!! I saw her for the first time open for the Allman Brothers in 1999 and Derek Trucks and Dickey were the guitarists. Those shows probably is how Susan and Derek met!

This is a very tasty and well constructed guitar solo by Susan with a lot of feeling too. She can and does pull off some great solos herself.
