Santana IV on AXS TV

I DVR'd it on Sunday night and watched tonight. Excellent show from the Hard Rock in Vegas from earlier this year. It's an hour long and worth looking up to see when it re-airs.

Had the chance to see a show from this recent tour and what a joy it was to see Carlos having so much fun playing with the original band members. Looking forward to watching this show on tv.

I just switched to Direct TV and was searching my guide last night to find AXS, stumbled across this Santana segment and went "Oh Sh*t!" Watched just a couple of tunes before I crashed.............just to hear Carlos playing with Michael Shrieve (drums) and Greg Rolie (organ/vocals) again............MAGIC.

I caught the last three tunes of this show and really enjoyed them. I thought the band sounded great but was most impressed with the tone of Neil Schon.
This may be sacrilege, but Carlos, while obviously a great guitarist, has a tone that is very shrill and thin to my ears and I find his solos and phrasing to be rather repetitive. Not to say I'm not a fan from many years back as I am. But there's something about Neil's tone and style that I find more interesting and warm, frankly.
Maybe because he wasn't playing the poppy Journey material most people associate with him than the early Santana he is in this reunion and the new material from the Santana IV recent release. I noticed his warmer tone and, in my opinion, more nuanced phrasing on the new single I heard on Sirius Jam on a few weeks ago. It's pretty wild to think Neil was, I think, 17 or 18 when he was brought into Santana by Greg Rolie way back in the day.
