Ryan Adams at The Beacon 5/3

Very impressed with the rocking, excellent show that Ryan Adams and his band put on last night at The Beacon. I know he has been critically acclaimed for years, but it never really grabbed me via the albums as they are very stylistically varied. That said, the show last night rocked - what a pleasant surprise! At times I was reminded of The Dead (w/ Jerry guitar sounds too) and The Band. Not sure if tour by tour (like his albums) you get something different, but this was great fun!

Agreed. I was there. You would have loved his work with the Cardinals. Check that stuff out.

One of my favorite's.
His new album, "Prisoner" deals with the end of his marriage to Mandy Moore. What's so amazing about him is how prolific he is. Two months after releasing Prisoner, he released the B-Sides to it. The B-Sides contained 17 songs and I thought they were also terrific. In my opinion, any of the 17 could have been included on the album.
Prisoner is much more mainstream Heartland Rock.
I loved his earlier work which was more Alt-Country.

Thanks for the Cardinals suggestion. Not great, but here's a pic from last nigh:

I'm a big fan of Adams' first two solo albums (Heartbreaker & Gold) as well as his Cardinals stuff (Cold Roses, Easy Tiger etc). When they weren't too loud (which they could be), the Cardinals were an amazing band. I saw him do a perfect 1 hour afternoon set with his current band at Shaky Knees fest in Atlanta a couple of years ago that was a run through his best known stuff and it was just great.
He diverges into some styles that don't do it for me and I think his songwriting is more generic on this last two "rock" records....at least the parts I've heard...I need to go deeper.
That said, the 5/3 setlist looks great (Everybody Knows, New York, Two, Winding Wheel, Dirty Rain) and I'd be all over that show if it came to Atlanta playing those tunes.
How was his volume at the Beacon?

It was a rocking show musically, but the Beacon can have great sound and I thought the show was well mixed with all instruments and vocals clear. Was it loud, yes, but not too loud to my ears. You want "too loud" go to a Cheap Trick show in a club ;-). This was a great rock and roll show.
