I'm going to see these guys at a nice local theater next weekend. How can I not? They are doing AFE and assorted songs:

Looks like a great night of music Jim. When I lived in Bethel I worked in Newtown and the Edmunds is a great place to see a show. I used to go to the cheap movies there.

@bill_graham  I have to assume that they will do "Pegasus" - how could they not? That would be a treat!

Interesting. Nice to see Mike Kach is back out on the road.

Goldflies has been trying to get Allman-related projects off the ground for a few years now. Looks like he's going full-on ABB tribute with Mike Kach after trying to do an original project with none other than Gary Allman a few years back.

Also had no idea Goldflies was once a member of Ram Jam.

@porkchopbob Of course I was very pleased with Alan Woody when they started touring again in 1989 but in a way it's too bad Gregg and Butch didn't like Goldflies or he would have been back.

I'm not referring to Rook as a person. Gregg and Butch didn't like his playing.

But didn't Rook play in Gregg's solo band around 1983 or 4 for a brief period?

I only recall Gregg taking a jab at Rook in his book - something about being paid by the note. Which is funny because Berry was a pretty busy bass player. Rook was in BHLT with Dickey, not sure if he was in anything else Allman-related in the 1980s. Butch might have said something, can't say, but a drummer needs to lock in with his bass players.

I haven't listened to Rook's playing as much as Berry, Woody, Lamar, or Oteil, but he always sounded like he was the right bassist for 1979. I think Gregg ragging on Rook is revisionism, another chance for him to take shots at a period of the band none of them are fond of. But they were all a part of it, playing "Liz Reed" at the speed of coke. And Rook must have been able to keep up otherwise he wouldn't have still been around in 1982 or have been asked to be in BHLT. However, I don't think Rook would have been the right guy in 1989, they clearly wanted to cut any ties to the Arista lineup. Probably both musically and peace of mind.

@porkchopbob Yeah they played everything, Ramblin' Man, Liz Reed etc very fast.

Butch Trucks was negative about Rook and Dan Toler several times in the 90's and 2000s. Butch's complaint was they didn't have the right chemistry for the ABB. And after Mike Lawler joined and they dumped Jaimoe for David Toler it was just embarrassing.

But Rook shouldn't take it seriously. After the spring of 2000 Butch really ragged on Dickey and he kept it up off and on for years. Nobody caught it from Butch like Dickey. A close second would be Ed King.

I do seem to remember a tour or so after BHLT broke up that Rook was with Gregg. I'll dig around and see if I can confirm that.

When the ABB decided to do two shows in 1986, Danny Toler was there but he was in Gregg's solo band. I wondered why they didn't have Rook at the Crack prevention show in New York the ABB played for Bill Graham and a couple of months earlier the one the played for Charlie Daniels in Nashville. Then when Butch was getting fussy on his blog here on the site around 1994, I discovered he thought Rook didn't have the right chemistry. Well Gregg and Butch felt that way about Johnny Neel. That is why his option wasn't picked up in 1991.

I think they also used Gregg's bass player, Bruce Waibel, for those shows. Was probably just easier since he was playing so much ABB material in Gregg's band.

Nope. Didn't see any indication at first glance that Rook was ever in Gregg's band. But a few bass guys claimed Gregg also didn't like Rook's tone. Said Dickey got Rook a Fender JB but Rook continued to use an Alembic bass much of the time and didn't seem to get Dickey's tip one guy wrote.

But Allen Woody played some Alembic bass guitars. Dickey has a couple of Alembic acoustics and one electric with RICHARD BETTS in pearl on the fret board. But I never saw Dickey play it on stage. Just a couple of pictures of Dickey showing it to Gregg about 1974.

Maybe Jan Jammer.  Or Jon Tesh.  The options are endless.  If only the ABB had a keytar alumnus....hmmm.

Well, color me impressed!! These guys were GREAT. See them if you can.

They opened with DWYNM/NMCTB, killer. Other early songs included Blue Sky, Ramblin Man, Southbound, Midnight Rider - they did an original instrumental called "Fadiddle" that showed off Rooks's fiddle skills!!!

I was incredibly impressed by Mike Kach's singing. He had his full Gregg down pat. They did the full Fillmore East album and really crushed it.

The one guitarist who vaguely resembles a young Bob Seger played kinda like Warren - he was the slide guy and had a creamy distortion sound that sometimes didn't cut through the mix all the way. The other guy, who looked a little like Roy Orbison, had a great sound that really popped out of the mix. Cool jazzy feel, some "out" bebop lines and interesting "Willie Nelson time" phrasing that did very cool things with playing around the beat. Not just cover band doppelgangers.

He wasn't.He was in a band called Starstruck with Bill Bartlett, who had been in the Lemon Pipers(Green Tambourine). Starstruck made a recording of Black Betty. Some producers liked it,but only wanted Bartlett so they put together a band with Bartlett and called it Ram Jam.

They used the Starstruck version on the Ram Jam album.

So Rook was on Black Betty, but he wasn't in Ram Jam

@uponthe2ndfloor How did Dickey choose Rook in 1977 or so. When Great Southern began in late 1976 I think Ken Tibbits was the name and was on bass and is on the first album.

Then there was a big fight over what songs were going to be on the next album and the next thing I know Dickey is on stage in Chicago I believe it was with a big black eye and Rook now on bass and a new drummer and keyboard players. Half of the band on the first Great Southern album were gone and replaced. Danny Toler of course was still there.
