Robin Trower last night

What a show last night at HOB in Chicago by Robin and his band. They opened with Somebody Calling and closed with Too Rolling Stoned and For Earth Below. Daydream, Lady Love, Day of the Eagle, Bridge of Sighs, and Confessin' Midnight were sandwiched in between some newer material to make up their set. Richard Watts handled bass and vocal duties, and although he is no James Dewar or even Davey Pattison, I thought it was the best he had ever sounded with Robin. Not sure who the drummer is this tour, but really enjoyed this younger cat's playing. I cannot remember the last show I was at where I hung on every note by the guitarist all night, but Robin had me drawn in fully. His tone was amazing and the sound at the venue was mixed perfectly, making for an awesome night of music. Robin is looking every bit of 69 years old, but still playing his ass off. Go see him before he stops touring - you won't regret it.

Good to hear.
Just found out a friend is the support act @ Robin's favorite venue, Jannus Live, on 11/12.
Thanks for the review.

Nice read, Thanx for the insight.

I was also at that show, and agree it was very good. I was only 3-4 people back from stage right, so just about 10 feet from Robin for most of the evening.
Not a big fan of standing up all night to catch a show, though. I did it for this mainly to hang out with a buddy I haven't seen since we were teenagers.
What did you think of the opening act? I enjoyed them. Sort of part Black Keys, part Black Crowes, imo. 70's/80's garage band rock with a good singer.

Robin rolled into Cleveland at the HOB last night for another great show. Sounds like the same play list as in Chicago except the encore was Not Inside Outside and Little Bit of Sympathy. I wouldn't normally know the names of the songs except I took a pic of the playlist taped to the floor. I had never seen Robin before but this concert took me back to my college days. What a unique guitar sound. Great fun show. First time ever I have seen folding chairs down on the floor of the House of Blues but I suppose that was due to the age of the crowd. Its a bitch getting old. In honor of the ABB Beacon Orch seats we stood - but not blocking anyones view. Most songs were short without any meandering jams but the sound was true to the one album I know - Bridge of Sighs. Too much fun.

I'll be seeing him at the Howard Theatre in DC on November 1st. Thanks for the reviews. They provide the inspiration I help push this body out the door and up the road for a show.

If you are not fortunate enough to be attending the ABB show at the Beacon on October 28th go see Robin Trower at BB Kings in Times Square. Eli Cook is opening.

I'll be seeing Robin in Boston next week at The Wilbur Theatre. Just down the street from The Orpheum Theatre where I last saw him play back in 1980. I'm long overdue for a Robin Trower show fix and am looking forward to it!

Glad to see all the positive reviews on Robin's shows so far. I was skeptical knowing that Davey would not be singing. I have seen Richard on vocals a few times in the past and just considered him passable at best. Really thought he stepped it up this time around. Has anyone caught the drummer's name? Robin obviously introduced him, but I missed it - never saw him on past tours. In all honesty, I would probably go see Trower if he was playing in a polka band! Love his style and tone, and even though he gets compared to Jimi far too often, I always thought there was a lot of originality in his playing. Tc is offering great advice to those who can't get tix for the ABB on the 28th - Trower is definitely not a consolation prize - just a different bag.
Btw Droog, I did catch the opener but didn't care for them - too generic for me and not enough of a blues influence. I know there aren't a lot of true Chicago blues artists left, but I always wondered why these British blues rockers didn't get some of their influences opening up for them here in the Windy City, the way Plant and Page had Otis Rush on the bill with them or the Stones had Buddy Guy.

Chris Taggart is the drummer.

Nice! Good to hear Robin et al are still bringin' it! He'll be out So Cal way in 2015. Trower On!

was at the Detroit show last night...solid show..new guys vocals were fine and Robin was smoking........peace

How was attendance at these shows? Any sell outs? I was going to buy my ticket for the November 1st show at the box office. Should I buy in advance?

I would get a ticket in advance Billy. The show here in Chicago was jam packed, although I was getting emails a day or two before the show that tickets were still available. The HOB here probably holds 1200ish, so the size of the venue he's playing in your area should be a determining factor. As others have mentioned, standing for a full show sucks (and I am only 46 - probably one of the younger people in attendance), so hope your place has seats!

For those who are interested in a seated show, Robin's playing the Wilbur Theater in Boston this Thursday. All seats reserved. Me and a couple of friends are heading in.
