RIP Yonrico Scott

Very sorry to see the news about the passing of Yonrico Scott. A super-talented and fan-friendly performer. He will be missed by many.

Oh My God I can't believe this. He couldn't have been very old.
Another one gone way to soon, Super Talented Drummer,
Just a super nice cat, condolences to his Family and Friends.

Sad news. Condolences to all who loved or were loved by Rico.

So sorry to hear this. Enjoyed seeing him when I could.

RIP
This one just shocked me. What happened?

Shocked by this post.
Saw him with the DTB band and royal Southern Brotherhood.
What happened?
I recalll he had some heart problems a few years ago but he was young......

Very sad news indeed, saw him perform at least a half a dozen times with the dtb...
You are already missed my friend

Terrible news. What happened?

Very sad news. Rest in peace and thank you for the music. I saw him with Derek Trucks' band and as a guest with the Allmans many times.

RIP Yonrico
I'd like to share some artwork he did for my band many years ago
He was a great drummer, artist and person

Saw him too. Very unique and tasty drummer. This is sad. He was 63 years old but his page did not reveal the cause of death. A number of important musicians to Derek have passed away in recent years.

This makes my heart sad. I always felt Rico was kind of lost after he split with Derek. There is no doubt in my mind that he would have been happy to play drums for Derek for the rest of his life, and once he lost that, there was a sort of sadness about him.
As the last poster said, Yonrico was 63, so he might have been older than some of you thought. He was a professional musician for a long time before he ever hooked up with Derek. We may or may not ever hear an official cause of death, but he was a 63 year old man with a history of serious heart problems.
I want to say that he was very gracious and supportive to my friends Freak The Jones. They never made it big, but they had a decent run, and I know they considered their times jamming with Yonrico to be some of the top highlights of their history as a band.
RIP Yonrico.

Very sad news indeed! Kofi Burbridge, Neal Casal and now Yonrico. It just doesn't stop.
"A super-talented and fan-friendly performer" really nails it Randall. Perfect description.
Saw him with 5 times with The Derek Trucks Band and 2 or 3 times with Royal Southern Brotherhood. Loved the setlists etc. he painted for the DTB.
Sincere condolences to his family, friends and fans.
RIP Yonrico!

I am so sorry to read this. I am fortunate to have a nice collection of his DTB setlists. I think he wanted to put them together into a book. Sad to see it may not happen.

Sad news. Hearing the four piece instrumental band in ‘98 was my entree into jamband revival. Rico was a big part of that great night of music.
Missed hearing him with Earl Klugh in DC but a friend said he was great with Earl.
RIP Yonrico Vondez Scott.

Had the pleasure of speaking with Yonrico many times. My wife and I had dinner with him once as well. He was so friendly and I think genuinely appreciated fans of his music. Never saw him outside of the DTB unfortunately. I can imagine he was dramatically hurt when the DTB came to an end. He was a fine man. May he rest in peace.

Very sorry to hear this.
Was just wondering last week what he doing lately.
Saw him with DTB & RSB a few times each.
I remember reading that Gregg wanted to jokingly steal him for his band when he first heard him.
As was pointed out, he was older than he looked.
RIP

RIP Rico! Very sad.
Reading into this AJC article near the end, sounds like Rico was experiencing more heart-health issues over this past year, and surfacing again in the past few days.

I always wondered what happened there Rob and if you have any details I'd be interested. I mean, Yonrico was such a monster drummer, I was really surprised that Derek did not retain him after the end of The Derek Trucks Band. But I figured it this way: Derek was going for a much more R&B slant in TTB. Yonrico being so powerful, maybe Derek felt the style did not mesh with his new musical direction. Just a theory because I am not in any kind of position to know what happened. Thoughts?

Since you asked for thoughts, here's mine: I think Yonrico Scott was a better drummer than both the TTB drummers put together whose names I don't even know (or care to). Just my opinion.

I read on one website concerning Rico's death that Derek informed him he was putting his band, The Derek Trucks Band, on hiatus so he could work with his wife in a band they were putting on the road and that was 2010 and the DTB is still on hiatus. Sounds as if Derek has completely abandoned that band after 9 years. That is too long to call a hiatus.

RIP Yonrico Scott. Thank you for the grooooves.
May your family and friends find peace.

Sad to hear this 🙁

That's partially true. With the initial announcement of TTB, Derek said that DTB was on hiatus and that they wanted to try something different with TTB. Seems like they described TTB more as a project, with no definitive timetable for how long it would last. I recall Derek also addressing the question about why not just do Soul Stew Revival with basically the DTB w/ Susan singing and a horn section, and Derek said they wanted a different direction.
I will give him the benefit of the doubt that's what Derek was thinking at the time. But it wasn't all that much long after when he started saying in interviews that DTB was done for good and TTB was his long-term/permanent focus for his own material. I don't know if TTB "clicked" quickly and he knew that's what he wanted to continue focusing on, or if he was tired of all the questions in interviews about DTB. Probably some combination b/c he definitely seemed irked by the continuous questions about DTB's status, but as we know now with hindsight, the TTB concept took off for him and Susan and that's the direction they've continued with ever since.
Derek quashed the idea of a DTB being on some sort of hiatus i'd say within a year of TTB's first outing.

Here is the Grammy notice:
