Sorry to hear this. A lot of great music and various bands through the years. Sail on Phil.

For decades & decades Phil, BO & Paul McC have been my favorite bass players

just another sad loss - just like Dickey, Johnny Neel, Willie Mays, Pete Rose, Luis Tiant, Fernando V….

there will never be another bassist quite like Phil, nor another band like the Dead

thank you Phil for your amazing music

RIP, brother

Surprising and sad news. Phil apparently had been battling bladder cancer since 2015. He was 84 years old. Phil was a trained trumpeter. But Jerry met Phil in passing and they hit it off and Jerry convinced Phil to learn to play a bass guitar and join Jerry's band The Warlocks. That band evolved into The Grateful Dead.

My first rock concert was March 1973 when The Grateful Dead played Nassau. Had Duane and Berry lived I always thought they would be touring like The Dead did for decades. Outdoor shows in summer we'd be up front and Phil would be running around before the show with a case of Heineken on his shoulder. He would come out before the show and monkey around with his bass. Crowd would be yelling "Phil". Phil steps up to the mic and says "what man". The Wall of Sound show at Roosevelt Stadium in summer 74 was my favorite. I was at a show Nassau late 70s and during set break Phil is at mic telling us "go buy tickets for tomorrow night box office in back is now open". So of course we did. He loved the music and us fans. Thanks Phil.

Very sad news. The best post Jerry Garcia Grateful Dead related show I ever saw was the Phil Lesh Quintet in Hershey, PA in 2002; John Molo on drums, Phil on bass, Jimmy Herring and Warren Haynes in guitars and Rob Barraco on keys.

Yes those early 2000s Phil & Friends shows are still some of my favorite Dead tunes. Saw quite a few shows at the Beacon.  Warren, Jimmy, Molo and Headband. RIP Phil

If anyone's looking for a fairly quick page turning, heady and informative read, Phil's book from the late 00s is one of the better autobiographies out there.

Searching for the Sound I think

A lot less about himself than other books like it
