Farewell to the Coal Miner's Daughter.  She was as deserving of the title, "Queen of Country Music" as anybody.  I actually saw her perform once.  It was a great show - one of those old-time revue type shows with a "barker" (lCol. Tom type -snake oil salesman) introducing her.  Her bio-pic was one of my favorites - thanks especially to Levon Helm!  She'll be missed.

She and her sister Crystal Gayle were from Paintsville, Kentucky (I think Chris Stapelton may be from there too or at least the same county). Spent a week there visiting a friend during my high school years. Interesting experience.

In college, I was a weekend dj at a country radio station. It was painful. Got a lot of calls complaining about the station playing her song "The Pill." Also got calls complaining when I snuck in songs from Dickey's "Highway Call" and Charlie Daniels Band "Fire On The Mountain."

I told 'em to change channels if they didn't like it.

@oldcoot What about Harper Valley PTA. Guess that was too trashy. If I were there I'd play this on the radio.

The sisters. I just remember one hit from Peggy Sue about 1969 or so.

@oldcoot Cool story!  I knew a young radio DJ in Birmingham who had to at least try to convince his boss that "Panama Red" (New Riders) was a cowboy.  An aside - I believe that at some point in the late 60's and early 70's that the best and most authentic country music was being played by actual hippies!
