RIP Leonard Cohen

I never even knew that Cohen wrote "Hallelujah" until someone posted this on Facebook after he died. I was familiar with the tune from the late Jeff Buckley's tremendous "Grace" record. GREAT tune! And to be honest, I am still completely unfamiliar with anything else that Cohen ever did.

I'm sure that a lot of folks here are familiar with his cataqlog, I hope.

In college, I bought his record "Songs from a Room" with Bird on a Wire & Tonight Will Be Fine on it. I was hooked on LC immediately. He lost all his money late in life and had to go back on the road in his 70s--must've been hard for him--although his fans were overjoyed to get a chance to see him again. I'm listening to his Live in London CD now. Eveybody Knows:

Leonard was the real deal. His books of poetry are beautiful and his albums are quite interesting. He was a buddhist and when he found out his manager was stealing from him, rather than take him to court and try to recover anything, he just kind of shrugged it off and decided to just go back out on tour. I saw him and he was incredible: A full band, probably 10 people on stage, playing all different instruments (not just bass, guitar, drums) and he played for over 2 hours, dancing across the stage with his suit, his fedora and his deep gravely voice. He released an album, The Future, and I highly recommend it. His songs were covered by tons of folks and if you're at all familiar with Dylan, there is a great live version of Isis from the Biograph album and Dylan starts it out by saying, "This one's for Leonard, if he's still here" and was talking about Cohen.

RIP Leonard.
A big part of the "club" of the three great songwriters--Dylan,Paul Simon & Leonard Cohen...
