Really a great guy. I met him a couple of times and we talked like we knew each other for years.

Former Philadelphia Flyer Joe Watson talks about the passing of Gordie Howe. Here is the article.
Today the entire hockey world is mourning the passing of Gordie Howe, the greatest player to ever lace up a pair of skates.
Former Philadelphia Flyers defenseman Joe Watson had a quite a few battles with Mr. Hockey early in his career and shared some memories of Howe on Friday.
“As a young boy growing up in British Columbia, the Detroit Red Wings were my favorite team and of course Gordie was one of my favorite players,” Watson told the Flyers official website. “I think everybody idolized him and looked up to him because of what he stood for. He was a tough guy. If things had to be taken care of on the ice, he could do that and he was so wonderful to people off the ice. He was a great family man and I had the pleasure of meeting and talking to him a number of times, and I can honestly say it was certainly a pleasure to know him. He’s a credit to the game and he’s a credit to life. Rest in Peace, my friend.”
Howe was one of the best goal scorers the game has ever seen, but he was also one of the most feared tough guys in NHL history.
Watson also shared the story of his first meeting against Howe during his rookie season with the Boston Bruins.
“A puck goes into the corner and when I get it, somebody hits me really hard, ‘oh my God, that hurt,’” Watson recalled to CSN Philly.
“My natural reaction was to turn around and elbow the guy. Which I did. I go back to the bench and Bobby Orr says to me, ‘you’re gonna pay for that.' It was Howe.
“So in the second period, we were fighting for position in front of the net. Gordie got me right in my nose. Broke my nose with his elbow. He said, ‘welcome to the league, rookie.’”
The NHL has never seen another player like Gordie Howe and they never will. Godspeed, Mr. Hockey.

R.I.P. Gordie, Phil Esposito has a similar story the first time he played against him, took a elbow to the face in the corner from his boyhood idol. His scoring records are something else, when he played in the six team era the best 120 players were in the league and he was amongst the best for years.

Bobby4 wrote at length about Gordie in his book, calling him the greatest of all time -- hands down
-- "He could beat you with finesse, he could beat you with brute strength, and that neighborly smile hid a truly terrifying ferocity"
In his book Unmasked, Gerry Cheevers said his most memorable moment in Gerry's 4 years in the WHA, was his team's season opener against the Aeros when Gordie came out of retirement -- "half the city of Detroit was in Houston to watch Gordie's comeback with his sons"
RIP, Mr. Hockey
