RIP Butch.
Lost Another One by Graham Nash
Just another morning cup of tea, I turn my radio on
And in between the static and the headlines
I heard that you were gone, we lost another one
There was a time we thought we were invincible
That we'd go on and on and on and all along
We'd thought we'd do another show and write another song
But I guess we've lost another one, let it slip away
Breaking all the silver threads that hold you to your dreams
One day they'll fall and you'll fly away
After all the trouble and heartache, we all go out alone
No body else can live your life for you, you're in it on your own
And you just lost another one, we let it slip away, yes, we did
Breaking all the silver threads that hold you to your dreams
One day they'll fall and you'll fly away
I lost a lot of friends on this highway, so long everyone
I watched them all sailing to the distance like a setting sun
They'd only just begun and we just lost another one
We lost another one
We lost another one

Me doing a photobomb (before I even knew what one was) to the right of my friend Giovanni having his photo taken with Butch Trucks at a pre-show party in NYC in 2006.
The following year, I can’t remember why, but the ABB had delayed announcing the Beacon 2007 show dates. So I posted on this web site that I was intending to take my younger son over to NYC for a 21st birthday present and each day they delayed the announcement the cost of the flights were going up and up. Later that day I got a private message from Butch telling me what the dates were so I could book flights and hotel - but he swore me to secrecy as they were not going to be officially announced for another couple of weeks.
Such a completely unexpected gesture made me, an ordinary fan, feel so much appreciated. RIP Brother Butch – the blues are certainly going to miss your rhythm.

So very sad. I sent Butch a PM once to make him aware of something I thought the band needed to know. I certainly didn't expect a response but thought if there was any chance of making them aware it might help prevent problems in the future. Not only did he respond, he cared. He cared enough to put me in touch with Bert Holman and Kirk West. They were all so kind and helpful you would have thought we were family. I don't have to tell anyone here this but we really are family, all of us. Rock on Brother Butch. We Love You and We Miss You already. Thank you.

I was at a complete loss of words yesterday and am not much better today. I want to thank Butch for all of the wonderful music he was a part of. Became aware of the ABB in '69 and was an instant fan. My deepest sympathies and condolences to his family, the ABB extended family and all of the people he made music and life with. My Derek continue his legacy.

DAMN IT BUTCH
Pretty awful but I guess I kind of read between the lines of stuff I saw yesterday and knew this was going to be bad.

just saw cause of death
DAMN IT BUTCH
Was really hoping the rumors weren't true. Unbelievable. Stunned.

This is so unbelievably sad I hardly know where to start. RIP Butch

Likewise, I feel so bad for his wife, I cannot imagine what she is going through after that.

There was a stepson years ago who I raised as a young man in life. Even adopted him. I never talk of him. I will a bit for my reason for advice. Got a call one day. He did the same as Butch.
Anger at this kind of event is normal. Beating ones head for logic of it is normal. In the end I believe what matters is the sprit is truly free. And the rest doesn't matter.
Love to all. Thoughts to all affected.

So very sad. It seems like something that could have been fixed with a Beacon Run for Butch.
Depression is an evil which consumes. God Bless Butch and his family especially his wife. I have a friend whose husband did the same and she has never really recovered.
Reminder to us all to listen to family and friends and be there for them when needed.

I'm stunned and saddened to hear what happened. Thoughts and prayers to Butch's wife and entire family.

Utterly heartbroken.
Words fail. God bless Butch and his family and friends.

God Bless Tony and thank you for sharing. I can't even imagine.

🙁 so sad , a feeling of such helplessness ..
searching for answers , how do you help someone out of the
Dark vacant place ...
I pray he has the peace he wanted so desperately and for
Understanding , comfort to his lovely wife and family .
My comfort is hoping he was greeted by his past on family
Of blood and musical brothers and sisters and all
The roadies
God bless your tortured heart Butch
Until we all meet again

Last time we saw Butch was at Wanee 2012. We got in as the gates opened for the Sunday sets and after we staked our ground for the day Butch came strolling past us in the crowd. We jumped up and called out to him. He stopped and we talked for a few minutes and took a photo with him. Then other people realized it was Butch and everyone just wanted to day hello. He hung out to say hi to everyone and take pics. We had net Butch a few time over the years and will always miss him.

so very sad...no words...love to all

I feel awful for his wife to have to witness that. Heartbreaking.

Very sad. Sending thoughts and prayers for Butch's family.
Thank you Butch for driving the music.

People tell me it don't turn no more

Familiar faces that ain't smilin' like before
The time of our time has come and gone" -Steely Dan Midnight Cruiser

I don't post here much anymore, but had to check in. Read the entire thread so far and it's great to see so many familiar names. I lost a dear friend recently and the best medicine is to gather with your friends to mourn, tell stories and laugh. Music heals also, as we know. Seeing all of your names instantly gives me warmth. We are a great community. My first thought of Butch was Wanee, the great times being there for a few of them. Seeing Butch behind the tympani's before the first song, kicking it off and knowing the next 20 minutes are going to be EPIC! Derek's guitar lines floating through the warm Florida winds, telling us that Duane Allman is here with us all. Butch was so active in the music scene and so passionate. Not every one of his projects were (financially) successful, but they ALL were noble. As many have said, Butch came here on HTW and on FB, he wasn't one to shy away. I'm a fan and appreciate all the folks I've met here, but I've never been in any inner circles with the band. However, Butch did reach out to me a few times, after reading a post. He was gracious and valued my opinions. I'm sincerely grateful for that. As we all gather into this cyber funeral home to mourn, we all have our differences, we may feel outraged with these times we are living in, but in death, love transcends everything. You will be greatly missed Butch, love is everywhere!

Crushed and devastated 🙁

Thanks Colin for this beautiful story. What a cool gesture from Butch.

I feel very bad for Melinda as she has to deal with the self-inflicted death of her husband AND the IRS tax problems do not go away which she will have to deal with while in such a fragile mental state.
RIP Butch -- senseless.
Condolences to the Trucks family, friends and music professionals who worked with and knew Butch.

Speechless....beyond tragic...
