Interesting Don was watching Duane play slide when Duane was 18, since Duane was 22 when he learned to play slide.

"Duane learned to play slide guitar on his birthday in 1968. He was recovering from an injury to his left elbow, caused in a fall from a horse. Gregg brought him a birthday present, the debut album by Taj Mahal, and a bottle of Coricidin pills."

You calling Don a liar? Perhaps some foggy dates? Perhaps some embellishments? Perhaps some Gainesville Green? Perhaps Stills didn't play in his garage band. Perhaps he didn't teach Petty guitar. Perhaps Bernie Leadon didn't ask him to join the Eagles. I dunno I tend to believe Felder instead of some story in a book that came from Gregg or worse yet Butch. 😉

Felder isn't a liar he's just off by 3 years.

Love Felder as a player.

Yeah, Felder's made this claim about Duane for years and it's never really made sense. Maybe he just has his time frame messed up, but DA didn't play slide when he was playing all the time around Florida.

Looking through One Way Out I found a number of passages that might support Felder's story. Gregg mentions picking up an open tuned guitar in a Pensacola motel room that he was sharing with Duane and writing Melissa. This would have been after Hour Glass broke up and Duane was already playing slide at this time. Gregg sold part of the copyright to Melissa to buy a ticket back to California. This would have been early 1968 I believe. Gregg and Duane were separated for about a year at this time.

Duane was in Florida for part of 1968 before relocating to Muscle Shoals. Felder would also have been in Florida at this time. Bernie Leadon would also have been in Florida at this time and he could have, as Felder maintains, accompanied him to Daytona to visit Duane.

According to Don Henley, the Leadon song My Man was about Duane, or at least he was the original inspiration before it turned into a song about Gram Parsons.

@Swifty - thanks for the close reading of OWO. That's all true. In the past, Don's timeline has not really made sense. I am just listening to this interview now... he's a friendly character... I still don't think the story quite adds up timing wise... not to say it didn't happen but when Duane was back in Florida after he started playing slide, was he playing Battle of the Bands and such?
