One of the best guitarists in last 30 years is one of my all time personal fav's Mr. Rich Robinson. We've had our parallel lives intersect on occasions at northeastern venues since 1992. He is a riff master extraordinaire. His guitar work had dominated the Black Crowes sound for all our enjoyment. He's known as the "classy" brother, not putting money and ego ahead of family and music. He brought his new band with an old face to the Highline Ballroom in NYC on August 6th in support of his new album Flux. The familiar face was BC's bassist Sven Pippien. I know Joe Magistro was on drums too, He's been with Rich on and off and was also an added percussionist with the BC's Before The Frost.... disc. I'll have to find the names of the other band members and add them in. If you're familiar with their names I'd appreciate the input to properly address their stage presence. He introduced the 2nd guitarist as Eko (?) and the Gent on keys as Matt. Great tight band. Rich himself just closed out a tour playing guitar with Paul Rogers and Bad Company.
I'm a music lover with a strong emphasis on guitar. I need something special, something unique, something interesting, something other than repetitive commercial dribble. Something that sets it apart. Rich has always given that to me and he deserves to be a recognized for his contributions to the Rock N Roll in the Black Crowes Rock N Roll, He along with Marc Ford and Jeff, Audley, Luther, & Jackie gave that sound the punch and drive that made it the entity that it was. Of course Ed Harsh, Adam, & Rob did their cosmic best on keys, and Steve Gorman rained down the thunder on the skins, but they were a double lead rock guitar band. Without him it would've just be some trippy hippie flutter prancing across the stage. If I am to follow and support any artist, I must like your music and also be able to stomach your stances and honor/integrity issues. Chris does not meet those requirements. Perhaps he should have the moniker "The other brother?"
As far as Rich Robinson goes, I love the guy! He continues to put out thoughtful refreshing varied music in an age that it seems far less likely to hit that note. I am super psyched to be able to make one of his Woodstock Sessions shows on the Weekend of AUGUST 19-21. He's reuniting Marc Ford and other special guests including Andy Aledort for the Sunday close out show. I'm hoping for many more offerings from this man and his band for years to come. I hope you can find something in his works that also suits your musical needs. Catch him if you can!

The blues rock attitude of the sixties stays perfectly alive with Black Crowes' Rich Robinson. Head-throttling guitars slam your head with emotional solos that are powered up and amplified to shock. With his back catalog recently reissued, Robinson approached Flux differently than his prior efforts. Whereas he previously wrote tracks at home and then beefed them up in the studio with his large backing band, Flux was a bit more improvisational. Fragments of songs were taken into the studio and worked out with his band until they popped just right. You can hear the excitement in the way the loose, almost ramshackle way all the elements come together, just like Bob Dylan's mid-'60s period. There are more risks and strange choices done than in any of his other solo albums or with The Black Crowes that it creates the atmosphere of pure musical joy. "Sleepwalker," his Eagles-ish ballad, is about independent thought and dealing with human emotions. While society stigmatizes open thought and emotion, Robinson's blunt lyrics and spiritual guitar embody pure feeling so beautifully that it is painfully real and raw. "Which Way Your Wind Blows" channels the aggressive English-blues sound of Bad Company with a bass line that weighs a ton and a guitar solo distorted so it sounds almost like a synth. Robinson's scathing lyrics taunt and mock in such a weirdly, sloppy way that it reminds you of the missing attitude from modern rock. Crack open a beer and blast this one. Its hypnotic blues-rock blend will take you back to 1975.

level as far as his guitar work,phrasing of his riffing ,melodies and song writing.
I have not heard his latest , but I am looking forward to getting it. I am sure
it is of high quality. I have not had the chance to see Rich yet, BUT I am getting

Just curious if you have a setlist from the other night. I am sure he rotates some songs
in and out , but probably keeps some constants also.
To be honest, I could care less if Rich and the Crowes get back together. After hearing
his first solo effort about 12yrs ago, I would rather hear him on his own..

I have tix for the Woodstock Sessions show in Woodstock on the weekend of August 19-21. Marc Ford and Sven Pippien will be joining Rich and there's supposed to be other special guests. I'm hoping Steve Gorman will make it up there with Crazy Ol' Ed.

Also Matt I can't believe you failed to mention the best solo effort by a former Crowe ... Steve Gormans Trigger Hippie ... Great record! 
Flux might be my favorite release this year. Seems like every time I have to drive more than a half an hour, I pop it in. For those of you heading to shows, I'm jealous. Enjoy!

Here's some pic's, info, & the 8/20 early and late setlist from the scene this past weekend up in Woodstock, NY. Rich Robinson & Friends were in town 8/19, 8/20, & 8/21 and had other guests including the wonderful Mr Andy Aledort on Sunday. I only attended the 8/20 show, but I heard the other 2 days were just as special. The Friday and Sunday shows sold out before I had my reservations in order.
The Friends included Rich's present band with Nico Bereciartua on 2nd guitar, Matt Slocum on keys, Sven Pippien on bass, & Joe Magistro on drums. I had my posters signed by everyone and wanted to give proper due to the musicians so I had Nico spell out his last name on the back of my poster. Great amicable folks all across the day, from the stage to the parking lot. Just a great crowd of humanity. Shout outs to Mike, Jeff, and other venue folks too. It all made the whole experience the whole experience!
The sweet additions of Marc Ford on guitar and Eddie Harsch on keys to go along with Sven gave us a great Black Crowes presence and made the illuminating music that filled the air much more special. Karl Berger on keys added a nice jazzy component especially during a guitar change out segment where had some nice moments filling in. Great stuff. Lightning in a bottle? Hopefully the CD's and DVD's from the weekend make it to a public market. I purchased a CD from the 6/1/14 Woodstock Sessions show while I was there. Nice piece.

^^^ This. In addition to Oteil & the Peacemakers and ARU, he also played with Jimmy Herring Band and did a stint in Susan T's solo touring band for awhile and I think may've played on Susan's last solo record. Excellent player.
