Revisiting the 2012 Beacon

^ See what drugs make you do... 😛

I liked a lot of the things I heard from the 2012 run. The fact that Warren was able to get Gregg to sing Needle was great. He has a perfect voice for it.
I am never as l as most when Gregg doesn't play with the band. I think they are a great band and a great time either way. I liked the Down Along the Cove and the Shakedown with Whatshisname from Steely Dan was interesting. If I am getting the year right, the only letdown, MASSIVE letdown, was that they did not rehearse and spend the time getting "In The Right Place" figured out with the Dr. John sit in. I would have loved to have seen that done right but whatever. Interesting run and the fact that we got Gregg to sing Needle seems worth all the troubled points to me. Great song for him.

Gregg wrote a book about it.
Some may call it a book... I think it's also well known he didn't write it.
Since everyone fixates on the negative, most of the talk in March of 2012 was about Gregg's state of health (understandably so).
Understandably so...because sometimes when you abuse the body for decades, it starts shutting down.
And as far as the Hep-c...anyone who thinks they can pinpoint the exact time they acquired the disease, as in a specific tattoo...are kidding themselves at best. But I guess the substance-related performance valleys for this band from other decades are interesting.
The band has a 45 year history. ALL facets of the bands history should be interesting, and certainly included to paint a true and complete picture.
The bands history is not just 2000 to 2014. As much as most believe it is...
You are totally missing the point: you are bringing up stuff everyone knows about that has been discussed ad nauseam which is irrelevant to a discussion about some of the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows.
No one is saying the band began in 2000, there are more than enough discussions about the band's well-documented history, but this is a discussion of the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows.
No is talking about how much Gregg co-wrote his book because this is a discussion of the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows. Stop fixating on the melodrama of the players, it's old news that you are shoehorning into a discussion of the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows.
Why you continue to shit on this thread is a mystery to me. But congrats, I give up, it's all yours, dude. My fault for wanting to hear some memories of the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows rather than getting a rehash of the same old discussion people insist on having here. I forgot everything needs the context of the public personal valleys of the band's singer. For someone who so loved the 90s version because of Dickey/Warren/Allen, I'm not sure how you couldn't enjoy some of the the great musical moments of the 2012 Beacon shows thanks to Derek/Warren/Oteil.
Oh, and you forgot to bring up Cher and a bowl of spaghetti.
Peace. Out.

Bernie Williams was great!! LOVED seeing Bernie with the band ( on youtube anyway)
Maybe he'll do Disco Inferno with Mule NYE?

I went to a show early in the run, so Gregg's health was a little better, but his somewhat frail voice gave "Needle" a little more poignancy. I didn't really think he could pull off a Neil Young song (or that I wanted to hear one at an Allmans show) but it was the thread of the whole run that year worked really well. Like a lot of people who bought the Duane Allman Anthology, "Down Along the Cove" was one of the first Johnny Jenkins tunes I ever heard - Ton Ton Macoute doesn't get nearly enough love.
I was at closing night (200th Beacon show!) of the 2011 run which ended with Dr. John, and I thought they nailed "Right Place". It wasn't as funky and tight, but there was a loose New Orleans intensity that I loved. Not sure if that's the same version you mean. They slowed down "Gilded Splinters" so it was closer to the original for him, too, I loved that show. One of Hubert Sumlin's last performances, I believe. I read that some people into Sumlin as a guest, which blows my mind - how can you complain about hearing Hubert Sumlin play on Howlin' Wolf tunes?
Anyone catch the Ruthie Foster show?

The return of some acoustic was a highlight for me. I think Derek and Warren blend in a different way with acoustics. A less bombastic version that is equally thrilling but in a different way. Would have loved more with some variety in the years after.
If Warren and Derek never record an album together one day, it will be a sin.

Warren recorded "44 Blues" on Derek's 2nd album, a time when The Allmans were in the rear view for Warren, and barely a thought or possibility for Derek. After years of being musical brothers, I don't think we have heard the last notes they play together.

Would have loved more with some variety in the years after.
HEY! Let's stay on topic here... 😉
You too axeman! 😛

Bob - I liked In The Right Place when they jammed but I just wished the rhythm guitar was more prominent during the verses. Having said that, I would LOVED to have been there for that.
Can't imagine why anyone would complain about seeing Hubert Sumlin either. That seems flat out nuts to me. It's my understanding that Clapton picked up a large part of his vocabulary from Sumlin.
I also notice from the setlists that the acoustic set from 2012 had far more variety that other years and that is something I surely wish I could have seen. Old Friend, Needle and Dark End of the Street in particular.

Perhaps all the anti Gregg and dickey threads and comments made by people who for some odd reason seem to think they are representing Gregg and Dickey should go to the WP.
After all its the same repeated crap regurgitated endlessly...kinda merits being tied to the WP!
