The visual and audio quality of this show is very high tech and professional. In the wake of Gregg's death some promoters offered Dickey good money and a nice little tour schedule to get back out on the road which made him feel good and Dickey wanted to pay a tribute to Gregg by playing some of Gregg's songs.
Dickey Betts stood toe to toe with the fantastic Duane Allman and led the band to super star status via his writing and playing on Brothers and Sisters. In 1989, 90, 91 and 92 Dickey often left more smoke on stage than Warren Haynes which is a big statement. In an early 90's issue of Hitting the Note Jamioe was interviewed and was asked about Warren and said Warren brought a spark and energy to the band that it needed to get close to the vibe of the original band and added "Warren is real good but he ain't no Betts. Dickey is a mother xxxxxx. Just listen to Dickey's tone. Warren will get there but not yet".
When you consider Dickey's unique guitar style, his contrasting singing on Blue Sky, Ramblin Man, Pony Boy etc and all the classic songs Dickey wrote such as Blue Sky, Jessica, Liz Reed, Southbound, Seven Turns etc, etc, etc, etc..Dickey's contribution to the Allman Brothers is HUGE! Taken as a whole Dickey was the best guitar player/writer the ABB ever had. Better than Warren, Derek, Jack, Toler and as big a reason the band was a success as Duane and Gregg.
But this new DVD/CD, while touching that he responded to a decent offer and wanted to honor Gregg in the process, does not add to his incredible legacy. Simply put, Dickey just cant bring it now. Age and life style apparently is the reason as his singing and guitar playing is tentative and strained.
I want to play my recordings of Dickey when, to use Jaimoe's words, was a mother xxxxxx!! Dickey said in an interview he had just done the Dan Rather interview and when he heard they wanted to do a DVD/CD of the last show on his brief tour, he was worried. Dickey said like Tiger Woods who had been off the golf course for several years, he (Dickey) is still trying to shake off the rust and get his playing back to just par. I dont know. I'm in my 70s with bad knees and can still slow dance but my boot scooting days are over. I just can't bring it anymore. Same with this show.
I may not play this show again. Give Dickey a A for effort and being a man and giving it his best. But it's like watching the great Hank Aaron or Mickey Mantle play at age 60 in a old timers game. Father time finally won.

Agreed. This is why I did not go see Dickey live on basically what is probably his last tour.

Tactfully written while being spot on

I went to see Mr Betts at the Beacon. From reviews that show was weaker. It was still worth my night out. Hey; Willie Mays tripped in the outfield during the 1973 WS
