Far out.
RIP Col.

I take small comfort in knowing he was doing what he loved.

Man.

I am stunned to wake up and read this. Condolences to everyone who knew him or enjoyed his unique style and presence.

At the very least he went out surrounded by people who he influenced and who loved him. The fact that show was arranged is the definition of a life well lived.

Only on Col Bruce's planet does this make sense. At least he died surrounded by friends and family, nearly 5000 of them.

Thank you Colonel.

I'm not really a believer in the supernatural or anything of the sort, but in a number of interviews I've read, when people talk about Bruce, they mention his uncanny knack for knowing things, an advanced intuitive sense that he had. You wonder if he had any sense that this was coming and that this was the way he wanted to go out.

He didn't seem surprised Jim Sheridan. I suppose you can see it all on YouTube. His final eye contact was with Brandon "Taz", the young guitar phenomenon. I kinda feel like he was mentoring all the way to the end.

It's very, very sad to wake up to this. Sincere condolences to the entire extended musical family of the great Col. Bruce Hampton. He was one of a kind- an incredible human being and a great mentor to the entire Jam band scene. His legacy will live on in the musicians that we all love. Rest in Great Natural Peace Col. Bruce Hampton. OM MANI PADME HUM.

This was actually a comforting sentiment. Thanks.

I assume you were there, Brock. Were you?

What a shock to see this news. JimSheridan, above, said it well; it was an exit that was in some ways consistent (appropriate?) for such a unique person that he was.

He wasn't a famous person (outside of this section of the music world), but what a broad and deep legacy that lives on.

I'd just like to point out that fame can't be measured in terms of $ signs. Col. Bruce Hampton has more respect and notoriety throughout the galaxies than any performer/artist that I can think of. There are many ways to measure success. One of them is by the company that the artist keeps and the respect that he commands. The Fox Theater stage last night bore a literal "who's who" of the music world.
There will never ever be another Col. Bruce. I don't think there was a mold to break - he was free-form all the way!
