Has Reese ever sat in with the ABB ,aside from his initial affiliation?

Not to my knowledge, but Reese is a fine player and a heck of a nice guy!!! In may of '87 i worked for SRV for one show, as we were busting butte moving stuff in, Reese hands me a drill and takes me to his B-3, says he wants new holes drilled and new wires run, I was a 23 yrs old, a little awe struck, I I informed Reese that no way in hell was i drillin any holes in the B-3 and he would have to get somebody else, he chuckled at me a bit.........Peace.........joe

I can't recall Reese sitting in with the Allman Brothers and I've been following the band since January of 1970. But my recollection could be incorrect.

Reese usually told those who ask that when Gregg decided to join the Allman Brothers, Duane told him with his brother joining, you will have to drop out because Gregg sings and we have two lead guitars and two drummers and having two keyboard players too would be too much.

So Reese stayed with The Second Coming. By 1973 the other guitar player in The Second Coming, Larry Reinhart, put a new band together called Captain Beyond and invited Reese to join. Reese played on the album but soon quit the band on tour because the pay was next to nothing and Reese said he was dirt poor, living in a friend's garage.

10 years later he was invited to play on a Stevie Ray Vaughn's new album at the time. Stevie liked Reese and invited him to play on more tracks. Suddenly he was invited to join the band.

I think right now Reese is a member of Joe Bonamassa's band and I think Joe produced Reese's new solo album.

??/??/70 @ Tampa National Guard Armory {aka "TAMPA ’70"} (1 disc)
{CaptSkipper remaster available}

This is a partial recording of the first set of an ABB gig with Gregg conspicuously absent, consequently Duane (and oddly, not Berry) takes over the vocal duties, and Reese Wynans sits in on keyboards.

Set 1:
Statesboro Blues (just the ending going into a Statesboro Jam)
Trouble No More (Duane vocal)
Goin' Down Slow (Duane vocal)
Tuning
In Memory of Elizabeth Reed

At the end of this recording, Duane says "we'll be right back in 5 minutes". One can only hope that another tape reel with Set 2 shows up somewhere down the line.

Recorded by Dave Boswell ~ Tape Transfer by Matt Smith

Lineage: MR > ? >> BASF reel @ 3-3/4 IPS > Akai GX-636 > Apogee Mini Me (24/96) > Apogee Mini > Dac (monitoring/mastering) > Wavelab 5.0 (Dithered to 16/44) > CD > Capt. Skipper for further mastering.

Bruce (tonewoods), who provided this recording to the ABB trading community stated the following:

I'm calling this recording "Tampa '70" for no other reason than that is what was written on the tape box, but the truth is we don't have confirmation as to the date and venue.

Skip (CaptSkipper) Littlewood subsequently added:

Pretty sure we got us a venue for the show. My buddy, Jack Weston, got through to Reese Wynans today and chatted. Reese said he remembers the show and that Duane called him to play. His recollection, that he said he is 98% sure of, is that the gig was at the Tampa National Guard Armory. Unfortunately, he could not pin down a date.

I thought he sat in at the Beacon not too many years ago when Gregg had an injured/broken arm or hand?

Nope, I was thinking of Page McConnell and it was back in 96.

He was awesome the other night. His playing was confident and a bit louder in the mix than I believe Gregg was.

I think I've only seen Reese once and that was SRV & Double Trouble in the late 80s.

He was tremendous the other night. Adding some flourishes and color that Gregg didn't do.....I appreciate that he could have played it exactly as Gregg had, but he gave it his own personality. A few times it sounded like horns when he and Derek got locked in.

A few times he solo'd and wish they had turned him up in the mix at those moments.

Perfect choice for the organ seat for the 50th Celebration.

The venue’s name was Ft. Homer Hesterly Armory. Caught many shows there, Byrds, Commander Cody, Leon Russell, my dad took us to wrestling earlier.

Unfortunately I missed this show AND Derek and the Dominoes at Curtis Hixon.

I did see the original ABB, the five man, and first tour with Chuck but could’ve heard Duane and Berry many more times than I did.

Truth is they were around so often we took them for granted and thought they would be around forever.

Still, I am grateful.

In Greg's book, He hated having to be the one who broke
up the Second Coming. The new Second Coming fizzled after
a couple of gigs. Reese schooled Greg on the Hammond when
he came to Jax. A long time coming.

Would love to have been a fly on the wall if conversation among the guys included Reese & Jaimoe sharing impromptu recollections of the birth of the band w/the famous cosmic March 1969 jam at the end of which Duane said Anyone who’s not gonna be in this band.....

Let’s hope there’s a CD release - that tremendous photo of the band w/the crowd behind them speaks volumes - well attended! Grin
