Primus and the Chocolate Factory

Caught this tour last night in Kalamazoo. I recomend going to catch one of these shows if you get the chance. The first set was all Primus songs and the band sounded great. Going into this show I wasn't sure what to expect from Larry LaLonde or Tim Alexander. Both of them blew me away with there playing. Les Claypool was Les Claypool, great bass playing and a really good frontman. This set proved to me that they are one of the great power trios of all time. At around an hour this set felt short but the length was neccesary to give them a chance to set up the stage for the next set.
Set two was Primus doing the songs from Willy Wonka. They where joined onstage by a cello player and Mike Dillon on vibes and percusion. I was excited for this set as the album was one of my favorites from last year. This set blew me away, it was one of the most pyshcedelic sets of music I have ever seen. To me it felt like more of a performance than a concert but they did it so well. They showed clips from the movie through out the set and it added to the performance. The only bummer was the guy who started a Primus Sucks chant during one of the cello solos.
For the encore they did a couple more Primus songs including the best individual song of the night, Southern Pachyderm. After witnessing that song I would recomend it to anyone who wants to get into Primus.
Without a doubt this was one of the best shows I've seen this year. They proved on this night that they are a band willing to take a risk and it seemed to me that they have a fan base that is willing to let them do that.

Going to see this on April 25 on Long Island!!!! 25 minutes from my house. Can't wait!!! I also love the Primus and the Chocolate Factory record and am looking forward to that set. I saw Les Claypool with his other three piece band a few years ago at Mountain Jam and have seen him sit in with Gov't Mule a couple of times but this will be my first Primus show and I am looking forward to it.

I saw this tour last year in San Diego, it was definitely pretty trippy. Though that may have been assisted by the mushrooms I was on...
I liked the Primus and the Chocolate Factory album, so I knew what to expect but the live show just made it all the cooler!
When I saw them Les Claypool told everyone that, yes Primus sucks and whatever, but the second half of the show really is more of a performance. So they asked for cooperation in giving them a bit more of a "performance" atmosphere and in turn we were rewarded with an extra two closing songs
