Phil & Friends-Anyone Tuned in Tonight

Stanley Jordan was such an outstanding and interesting pick for this lineup-truly inspired.
Was listening to Scofield with Mule today...those improv jazz guys do really know how to improvise and they totally get the jam!
Jordan was so good with Phil(they really seemed to enjoy playing together) and even kadelick,or pretend Jerry as I prefer to call him,was sounding less pretend and instead being himself.Very cohesive, incredibly jazzy but flexible sounding band.A great night of music last night so excited that it starts in a few.

Watched the webcast the last two nights, really great.
SJ adds a unique twist for sure. The flips and laying on the floor and some of the exaggerated rock star posing seems a bit out of place in a hippie band but that has nothing to do with the music.
As to John K, I don't call him fake jJerry and this is why. I was concerned when I went to the single Furthur concert Inattended but in the room his voice was deeper and more gravely than Garcia. The playing was clearly Jerry influenced by JG, that's why he got the gig.
But the real reason I like him quite a bit now is I got to hear JK's band a couple times in DC in 400 seat concert clubs.
He really didn't sound like Jerry on the singing. like this weekend. He is moving away from his DSO roots.
His playing on those gigs was in the jam style but much more ambient, dense, atmospheric, spacey, and....psychedelic.
This weekend I saw that when SJ is not soloing he almost lays out. During those segments you are almost hearing a four piece band, and the big psychedelic jams that came out of those quiet parts were John K at his best. The ending jam out of Unbroken Chain Friday is a great example of what I'm talking about.
I believe Jerry Garcia and Phil Lesh invented jam rock. The ABB solidified it under Duane and Betts. It is now a genre and people by the thousands practice and follow the style.
Kimock, Sless, Stu Allen...hundreds more are following that light.
Every town has a Dead cover band, we don't die we multiply.
Art Pepper was not a Charlie Parker clone but he worships at the altar of Parker as did many others.
The legends influence what comes after.
Subjective opinion of course.
Now I have to decide bewteen Phil and baseball with the Series on the line.

Of the 3 nights the first was clearly superior.
Night 2 had a first set filled with some clunkers and cover tunes and it just came off poorly. The second set was stronger but a bit disjointed.Jordans Voodoo Chile was excellent but overall an off night-compared to the first!
Last night we went and sat center loge front row-buying those tix last minute,as we do all the time now sure pays off!
Sound was way too loud. There was a third guitarist noodling,shredding...never stopped playing and he walked all over the other guitarists leads all night.Phil was booming, playing great but the three headed guitar monster was a mess particularly on Dancing in the Streets.Jordan was mute a good part of the night and kadelick played well, but both were hindered by the third guitarists playing over everyone. He did sing some of the Weir tunes nicely...maybe that's why they added him.Ive seen Phil & F fiends quite often..this was not their best work...it was encouraging after night one but while we had fun it was not a good show.Looking forward to the next band Phil brings next weekend.
I should mention that last night's show was a recreation of the 11/1/85 Richmond show...original was very good...high energy.

Sirius 23 replayed Friday night's show and the parts I heard were terrific. I kept asking myself who the F is that on that jazz guitar? and when I learned it was SJ, it all made sense. They guy nailed it.
I agree with dadof2 about the 3rd guitarist. Completely unnecessary. Phil did this with Carlos and Warren @ Lockn' and I couldn't figure it out. The masters can play rhythm, too!
That said, I went back and watched that one again and my appreciation just grows and grows. The entire band was having a blast. Still in awe that Carlos stepped into that space like he did.
