It was 40 years ago today that Paul Kossoff lost his long battle with substance abuse on a flight from L.A to New York. A phenomenal guitarist who never went overboard with his instrument. He left behind an amazing body of work.
Also, Randy Rhoads lost his life on this day in 1982 in an horrific plane crash whilst on tour with Ozzy.
R.I.P.

Sadly, I never got to see Free so I never had the opportunity to hear Paul Kossoff play live ... but they were one of my favourite bands at the time.

"The Free Story" is a great compilation CD that I still often listen to ...

Great post! Cool Both of these guitarists died on my birthday. Paul Kossoff is very underrated. He was a influence to more guitarists in the style of hard rock than the world will ever know. Randy Rhoads died when I was 15 years old. I started playing guitar two months later because of Randy Rhoads.
