Owsley Stanley's "Bears Sonic Journals" ABB Fillmore Recordings

I ordered the single cd from amazon and have been playing it in truck since Saturday. I never had the original when it came out. It's the best 13 bucks I spent in a long time, the music sounds great and it's the ABB in their infancy, you can hear Duane and Dickey loud and clear, Gregg sounds like he's older then his early 20's and his B3 is right there, Butch and Jaimo are laying out the rhythm and Berry is pretty low and hard too hear.
If you like the original 6 you'll be a happy camper, I'll be playing this for a while from start to finish. What does everyone else think of this release?

Very much appreciate the link and info and delighted, but not surprised, that there are plenty of other ABB fans out there on other community boards ---- but what's with the holier than thou comments I kept reading putting this site and those of us who are still using it down so much?
You'd think this release is something we'd all be celebrating....
I must have missed that page or post. Who was putting this site and the people on it down?
I said it's dying a slow death here, but is it not. As we get further and further away from the ABB being an active band there is less and less interaction on here.
As far as this release goes, it could have been done so much better. I don't understand why the only physical release is something that was already out there. I'm guessing there just isn't much money to be made by doing a 4 CD set that includes the 3 downloads with it. Personally, I rarely do downloads I just like physical media better. I'm stuck in a time that is quickly fading away.
No reason all the music couldn't comprise a CD box set, but leave it to the business savants within the ABB organization to effectively set themselves up to compete with themselves with Cream of the Crop 2003....That said, wouldn't be surprised to see more CD's at some later date (with enough so-called popular demand)

Listened to the three Liz Reeds.
Blazing. Betts on fire, Duane of course you can hear the development of many of the ideas that made it to LAFE.
You need a Flac converter.

Not even sure what this means.
Thought my post was pretty clear. Promised, not delivered. Yes the Johnny Rotten/hippie thing is open to challenge and interpretation, but that was not the crux of the post.
I'll reword it, then bow out.
It's a legitimate complaint. When they first issued the plea for donations to salvage the rotting Dead reels, the push was that it was urgent as the tapes were almost unsalvageable, and in a few years would be lost. That was more than a few years ago. Not one Owsley Dead tape has been produced.
Stands to reason then that the tapes that were going to be unsalvageable in a few years, from a few years ago, are now beyond recovery or very nearly so.
No big mystery or veiled accusation, just wondering when they will make good. These ABB tapes were already rescued years ago, so really the only thing new they have to show for years of effort and donation collection is the Doc box.
If that's ok with you, fine. My opinion is based purely on what they promised and never delivered, plain and simple.
Hi All....
I wanted to jump into this conversation to try to set the record straight(er) on the Owsley Stanley Foundation.
I am Starfinder, Owsley's son, and the President of the OSF. I'm not sure who BrerRabbit is (and hopefully this won't end with me tangled up with a tar-baby!), so I can't check on his donation, but I am not sure how he has arrived at a conclusion that we have promised something and not delivered it. (Did you not get your tshirt if you chose that as a perk on the indiegogo campaign?)
My dad passed in 2011, and we started the Foundation the following year. We have been raising money as a 501(c)(3) nonprofit for the purpose of preserving the musical history contained in Bear's recordings (many of which are not the Grateful Dead) for a little more than 5 years now. In that time we have preserved around 300 of the ~1300 reels in the archive, prioritizing the most fragile/imperiled and significant tapes, and we are optimistic that we will be able raise enough money to transfer the archive before so much time has passed that we lose tapes, based on our continuing fundraising efforts and the condition of the tapes.
We have produced an exquisite 7-disk set of Doc and Merle Watson as our first completely in-house production, with half the profits going to the Watson estate and half back into the non-profit to save more tapes. We brought you improved and unreleased, freshly mastered ABB (you're welcome), and are working to give you more formats and options to listen to that. We have several more releases in progress now. As far as Dead tapes, the Grateful Dead and Rhino regularly release Dave's Picks, quite a number of which have been from Bear's tapes, and we continue to partner with them to enable that. We work with the artists first and foremost -this isn't some bootleg collection that we can share without regard.
We are an 100% volunteer organization- that means that nobody who runs the OSF gets paid a dime. We only spend money on the engineers we employ to do the transfers and people contracted to work on the productions -despite a number of people who put in ridiculous amounts of time to run the foundation and set up productions. Most non-profit organizations have paid employees.
So no, no free hamburgers (or fat hippy rats) here.
I am sincerely sorry if any donors feel that we haven't been making sufficient progress, and encourage you to remedy that misconception by checking out our facebook page, which is where we post regular updates on what we are working on:
I'm not sure how many albums BrerRabbit has produced, but the way we do things is uncompromising, and we are unapologetic that we take the time to do it right.
If you still feel dissatisfied, contact us and we will confirm and refund your donation. Or send you a hamburger, if you prefer.

Hey Starfinder, I'm a long time taper dork and a fan of your fathers work. I got the disc back in 96 and have always loved it for the performance and the sound. I got the downloads a few weeks ago and love that too! I love hearing new and improved original ABB! Thanks for your efforts, best of luck and keep them coming!

Thanks for the schooling Starfinder! LOL tarbaby, good one. Great to know you folks are kickin @ss backstage. I was ultrastoked over this - drummed up a bunch of donations years back, plugged your outfit to family and friends, who all chipped in. I had a (totally erroneous) visual of a couple of old stoners wirh a garage full of rotting tapes pulling bong hits while donations trickled in. Looking forward to hearing, and thanks for the excellent effort. Got any Moby Grape back there?
I owe you a hamburger.

Classy moves all around. You don't see that much in these "dig your heels in and argue until nobody even remembers what the dispute was" days of the internet.

Starfinder -
Thank you so much for sharing the workings of your foundation - I appreciate your efforts to save the tapes, especially the ABB and the Grateful Dead. I will be contributing too.

Thank you for that, BrerRabbit. Sorry that we haven't been more actively communicative about what we've been doing at the foundation -we've had making a email newsletter on the to-do list for a while, but that list somehow keeps getting longer instead of shorter! Meanwhile, we've got a few more tricks up our sleeves in the short term, and we're starting to get enough momentum going that it will be harder to miss our continuing efforts.
Strangely enough, "tar-baby" was actually a phrase my father employed from time to time... must have been the southern upbringing!
Thanks for your support, guys. We enormously appreciate everyone who loves this music and wants to help preserve the history it represents. We'll try to keep bringing you morsels to enjoy!
