https://www.jambase.com/article/previously-unreleased-allman-brothers-band-recordings-february-1970-fillmore-east-run-coming

In 1996, a CD featuring selections from The Allman Brothers Band’s February 11, 13 and 14, 1970 concerts at Fillmore East in New York City recorded by pioneering sound engineer Owsley “Bear” Stanley was issued and eventually went out of print. The Owsley Stanley Foundation teamed with The Allman Brothers Band to re-release the material, with all new mastering, as Bear’s Sonic Journals: Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970. While the CD release will contain the same sequencing as the 1996 version, high-resolution downloads are coming soon that will showcase never been released tracks from all three concerts.

Bear’s Sonic Journals: Allman Brothers Band, Fillmore East February 1970 on CD is available for purchase starting today at the Peach Music Festival in Scranton, Pennsylvania. Copies will then be sold via the Owsley Stanley Foundation website beginning on July 24. The high-resolution downloads featuring the previously unreleased material goes up for sale on July 27 through the Owsley Stanley Foundation website.

The February 1970 Fillmore East shows include the original The Allman Brothers Band lineup with guitarists Duane Allman and Dickey Betts, keyboardist Gregg Allman, bassist Berry Oakley and drummers Jaimoe and Butch Trucks. Bill Graham put together a triple-bill for the concerts that also featured the Grateful Dead and Love. Listen to a sample of the “In Memory Of Elizabeth Reed” that opened the ABB’s performance on February 14 with the all-new mastering found on the new CD version:

The goods keep on coming!!!! The last number of years have been great for ABB archive releases. This one with the better sound & packaging and extra download tracks to add to the Fillmore East Box set, Brothers & Sisters Box, Play All Night, Cream of the Crop 2003, Live from A&R Studios etc.....The Duane Box from 5 years ago...

The vast majority of ABB I listen to are these releases all from the last 4-5 years.

I was in hopes that the physical release would have more than just what was previously available on the Dead's ABB release Fillmore East 2/70, but hopefully it is at least improved sound.

From what I've heard the downloadable extras aren't complete songs, that is why they aren't included in a physical form.

I am glad it is back in circulation for those who didn't get it the first time.

Here is some more discussion about it if you are interested.

I'm really glad they are re-releasing these shows, and including all of the songs by both bands. I will probably eventually buy a copy.

Here's the material planned for download listed on their website. Looks like three full IMOERs!

3. Trouble No More
4. Hoochie Coochie Man
5. Mountain Jam (Incomplete)

February 13, 1970
1. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
2. Outskirts of Town (Cut)
3. Mountain Jam (Incomplete)

February 14, 1970
1. In Memory of Elizabeth Reed
2. Hoochie Coochie Man
3. Outskirts of Town (Incomplete)
4. Whipping Post
5. Mountain Jam (Incomplete)

If there were three shows recorded then from looking at all of that the downloads give us the following:

2 additional IMOER
1 additional Hoochie Coochie Man
2 partial Outskirts Of Town that were apparently cut together to make the version that was on the original CD
3 Incomplete Mountain Jams that were apparently cut together to make the version on the original CD

Does that sound correct?

I don't think that is what is happening at all.

Details here. I can’t believe this isn’t being discussed more on the board.

Made one of these shows. Often went to New York with my late dad who went in his association with Acoustic Research high fidelity stereos. AR had what we thought was the best speakers for home use at the time, the AR3. Acoustic Research had a soundproof room with their equipment displays in Grand Central Station near the steps that led to the main floor on the side. I can't remember which door and street it was off of.

Anyway I remember Jaimoe played percussion, timbales, congas etc on a lot of songs with Butch the only one on traps.

And Duane played a Goldtop Les Paul and Dickey played a Strat. Can't remember what Berry played. Sometimes he didn't use the tractor. But they were tight, clean and lots of energy. Mountain jam absolutely smoked. They slowed it down a little it seemed by 1971. It's so hard to remember clearly 48 years ago. At least I haven't changed. Still look like my 1970 photos:)

I had started a different thread on this back in June, but it quickly faded to the 2nd page. This site is dying a slow death.

There is good discussion about this on the Steve Hoffman Music Forums. Sadly it has far more active discussions about the ABB there than on the boards on the bands own site. I'll link it below for anyone who is interested. I think I linked it earlier as well.

I purchased the new digital download of all of the available material from all three nights. Unfortunately, I can't get the file to open, regardless of which way I download it. Ouch!!! 😮 😮 😮

For those of you that have taken the plunge, do you feel it was worth it to get the "full" recordings, opposed to the compilation?

So, after all has been revealed, is it safe to say that the original track list dates are as follows?

1) In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (2/14)
2) Hoochie Coochie Man (2/14)
3) Statesboro Blues (2/11)
4) Trouble No More (2/11)
5) I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town (2/13 & 2/14)
6) Whipping Post (2/14)
7) Mountain Jam (???)

Can anyone who's downloaded the whole thing shed some light on the make-up of Outskirts and Mountain Jam from the 1996 release?

They did confirm that Mountain Jam was cut together from multiple shows, I assume Outskirts was created the same way.

The liner notes to the original CD release had Kirk West's handwritten notes about the source(s) for each track on the CD. I'm at work and don't have the CD here so can't pass that info along.

I don't recall Kirk West writing copy, I might be wrong. Since it was a Dick's Picks release, it included Owsley's recollections.

That first panel is KW's hand writing. I have to double-check about the song sources. I'm sure I have that.

I was really looking forward to getting these digital downloads. I went straight to the site as soon as they were released only to get the message “We currently cannot allow customers outside of the United States to purchase Digital Products” . 🙁

If you look in the link to the Steve Hoffman forums that I listed earlier in this thread there is a work around. It involves just selecting a random location in the U.S. as your address and maybe another step and you can get it.

My original release had an insert that had the details for each song. I Scanned it and tried to upload it here, but could not figure out how to do it.

Baba Orion's list is largely correct. The first part of Outskirts is from 2/13 and the end from 2/14. Mountain Jam is 2/14 from beginning to drums and 2/13 for drums to end.

1) In Memory of Elizabeth Reed (2/14)
2) Hoochie Coochie Man (2/14)
3) Statesboro Blues (2/11)
4) Trouble No More (2/11)
5) I'm Gonna Move to the Outskirts of Town (beginning 2/13 & end 2/14)
6) Whipping Post (2/14)
7) Mountain Jam (2/14 beginning to drums and 2/13 drums to end).

The more I look at this "Owsley Foundation" the more I smell a big fat hippy rat.

May I ask why you say that?

Very much appreciate the link and info and delighted, but not surprised, that there are plenty of other ABB fans out there on other community boards ---- but what's with the holier than thou comments I kept reading putting this site and those of us who are still using it down so much?

You'd think this release is something we'd all be celebrating....

I must have missed that page or post. Who was putting this site and the people on it down?

I said it's dying a slow death here, but is it not. As we get further and further away from the ABB being an active band there is less and less interaction on here.

As far as this release goes, it could have been done so much better. I don't understand why the only physical release is something that was already out there. I'm guessing there just isn't much money to be made by doing a 4 CD set that includes the 3 downloads with it. Personally, I rarely do downloads I just like physical media better. I'm stuck in a time that is quickly fading away.

I'm still missing the "the holier than thou comments I kept reading putting this site and those of us who are still using it down so much?" part of it.

I said this place is a ghost town, someone else mentioned that the initial post of this dropped off the first page. The person before me made the comment about this page is where the "rabid" fans gather and there wasn't much interest in discussing this release on this site.

Maybe you read a tone into it that I didn't. I don't think anyone was putting down anyone still on this page, just commenting on how activity on this page has dropped off.

Agree that we are reading 2 different things.

Not a big deal and I didn't mean to detract from the main issue, which is an exciting release of some rarely heard material. Very grateful for it
