Oteil On Joining ABB, Dickey Leaving, Summer 2000 & More

Had a fascinating chat with Oteil in which he shares one amazing story after another:

Interview starts at 19-minute mark

Bummer - can't get it to play.
Do you need a subscription or sign in credentials to listen?

Not at all! You should be able to just press play on the player at the bottom of the post. If that doesn't work try here:

It worked for me. I don't have the time to listen now, so I downloaded it for later.
Also saw this brief ABB related article while I was there...

Thanks for this, listening now and its great!

Great chat, love hearing these guys talk about their days on the road. Especially nice hearing Oteil talk about Kofi and his own early days with the Allmans since that is kind of a forgotten era. Not sure why the host is so interested in the tour buses though. I had heard Oteil moved near where I live in south Florida, he's shown up at the Funky Biscuit and Crazy Uncle Mike's a handful of times. Must be nice chilling at the beach between mini-tours and shows.

Got to listen to this - awesome stuff Oteil shares here.
Can't wait to hear what Kofi had cookin' in the archives and for Oteil to put it together.
Cool to hear how Tom Dowd diplomatically tipped his hat to Oteil during rehearsals and how Gregg felt Oteil was the guy almost right away.
Sounds like Col. Bruce basically frightened Gregg.
Funny hearing about the "weed bus".
That Vida Blue record is really, really good. I remember it well and need to revisit it.
I agree, what is this interviewer's fetish with tour buses?

Thank you for posting this, it's always fun to hear from Oteil. I especially liked the story about the Mountain Jam from Zeta Reticuli. I'm glad to hear he's going to work on some of Kofi's tapes and will be releasing some of his music. This sounds like a great way to honor the legacy of his fallen brother. I'm also glad to hear that Oteil is doing well with his family.

Ha, I probably should provide better context for new listeners, but the topic is called "Reelin' In The Years" and it's a discussion of a legendary artist's career in the context of the ways they've toured since they started. ie. in the case of folks like Oteil van > Buses > Airplanes, etc. Just gives a string to keep the conversation flowing and not get into the weeds.

That makes sense, thanks for clarifying - great interview!

I can appreciate that approach - and I dig all things van, buses and planes so it's all good

Wish there as a written review of it. The links don't work for me either. 🙁
Everything in Moderation. Including Moderation.

There are some more funny stories about the Quaalude that I heard long long time ago, so OP should do a follow-up but give Oteil some advance warning to give it a think ahead of time.
Also, how could Oteil forget the church bus from the mid to late 1990s? Blessed are the Peacemakers!
Very enjoyable interview!
Also, Kofi's first show with ARU that was also billed as Bruce's last show ever (on the marquee!) was at the Georgia Theatre in Athens. It was April 15, 1994. I know they did a couple or three shows after that one to fulfill contractual obligations, but it was never clear to me whether Bruce played at those also or if they did the shows sans Bruce. And no tapes have ever surfaced. But 7-8 weeks later they had Paul Henson in the band for Mk II version of ARU, with nearly an album of new tunes.

really enjoyed it, thanks!!

Cool post. Ive got to hear it all.

For me, I couldn't even press play or drag the cursor across the timeline to skip ahead. Simply nothing happened. This was in Mac OS 10.14.14 running latest Safari.
I only got it to play using my iPhone browser

It played on my phone. Enjoyed the listen.
