As part of The San Jose Jazz Society's Winterfest, San Jose Jazz Collective did a tribute to Weather Report Friday night, 2/28/20. The Collective is headed by drummer Wally Schnalle, a longtime local HEAVYWEIGHT. He and others in the band did all the arrangements. FYI this is a long video, 12 minutes.

It was 90 minutes and it was great. I do not know the name of this tune......anyone? Interesting that while it was all Weather Report, the instrumentation in this band is very different than Weather Report. Instead of playing synthesizer like Joe Zawinul, the keyboard player plays a Hammond. As you will see in his lengthy solo here, this dude can REALLY smoke that machine. Then instead of just Wayne Shorter's sax parts, they have a two piece horn section, sax and flugelhorn. They also have a guitar player which Weather Report never had.

So saddened to hear this. Fortunate to have seen him a number of times at Yoshi's in Oakland. Always a great performance. Gonna be missed.

Tranes great quartet is reunited

I saw him about 5 times, both in Cambridge MA and the Blue Note in NY. Always great. He just pounded those keys, played piano with the same intensity that Trane played tenor

memorable "side men" were Michael Brecker, Billy Cobham, and a special appearance by Savion Glover

RIP
