On June 1, "Sgt. Pepper's Lonely Hearts Club Band" will be reissued for its 50th anniversary. It will finally include "Strawberry Fields Forever" and "Penny Lane". George Martin called their omission "the biggest mistake of (his) professional life."

Seems kind of pointless to me, I'm so used to it being a part of Magical Mystery Tour (US release). Pepper is pretty perfect as it is, it doesn't need 2 more songs, even if they were singles initially intended to be a part of the album. Pointless revisionism, but hey, whatever.

Funny - I don't remember anybody being furious about the omission of Strawberry Fields and Penny Lane.

It was fairly common in those days for hits singles not to be included on albums.

The total run-time is bang on 40 minutes so they couldn't have accommodated the two extra tracks (in excess of 7 mins) without dropping at least a couple of others. I would have opted for Good Morning, Fixing A Hole and Lovely Rita.

Or maybe Within You, Without You and When I'm Sixty-Four...!

The only interesting thing will be where they sequence them in the track listing.

sevral years ago when I got my first stand alone CD burner so I could trade shows during the B&P era I made my own copy of SPLHCB with SFF and PL. I think I put it on my Ipod but I am away from home and dont remember where I put them sequence-wise.

They fit so well on MMT & have been a part of that album for so long -- agreed, seems frivolous -- Sgt. Pepper & MMT are 1 to the other -- twin masterpieces

YAWNER. Kind of like yet another LAFE release of already released releases just in a different playlist.

The technical term for this is marketing (or merchandising -- experts disagree). How many times have different recordings been remixed, sliced, diced, and so on, just to make a buck? Too many.

"What has been is what will be, and what has been done is what will be done, and there is nothing new under the sun."

Ecclesiastes 1:9 (King Solomon; ca. 450 BC)

When I worked in record stores in the '70s, greatest hits compilations often included one or two songs that hadn't been on the other albums. So you had to pay full album price for one or two songs, if you were a completist.

And so it goes.

Like porkchopbob said "Pointless revisionism" and also since there has been a recent tsunami of US/UK/STEREO/MONO reissues of their entire back catalogue i would say "let it be" . 😉

In Penny Lane there is a fireman with an hourglass
And in his pocket is a portrait of the queen

Nobody can craft a melody like Paul; but these lyrics led to the birth of the fireman's bastard son Admiral Halsey

George Martin called their omission "the biggest mistake of (his) professional life."

If that's the worst mistake he ever made, he had a pretty damn good life

Now, that's a wonderful understatement. 😉

Take a few minutes to read about Sir George's life: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/George_Martin
