The rule is clear. Bet on baseball and you're out. He bet. He's out.

Interesting that the Commissioner made the comment that the HOF is not run by MLB and therefore is a separate issue for the HOF to decide. Seems like he was throwing Rose a bone on that one. At age 74, he won't be reinstated while still alive. He is his own worst enemy and did himself in by continuing to bet on baseball.

And I heard that Rose will have his news conference today from where he lives, Las Vegas.

The HOF will not go against MLB on this one, he ain't getting in.

Shoeless Joe Jackson should get in before Rose.

Not saying I disagree at all ( and I'm a Reds fan ) on upholding the ban, but I was wondering about the potential hypocrisy at play regarding steroids and other PHD's.

Does anyone know if the use of those results in a ban, too?

At the end of the day, you could argue that both betting and PHD's are a means to unfairly alter the outcomes of a game and therefore compromise the integrity of the sport... and probably go so far as to argue that PHD's accomplish this even more emphatically than betting.

Are guys like Conseco and McGuire and Clemens banned by MLB?

McGwire has been a coach in some capacity with several MLB teams since he retired. He is currently the bench coach for the San Diego Padres.

Pete Rose is the only current living person banned from baseball.

The difference between Rose and anyone from The Steroid Era is that MLB was complicit in The Steroid Era. It's easier for them with Rose because they ultimately can shift more blame his way.

MLB's current drug policy didn't take effect until 2006. It is based on the 2004 drug policy but with stiffer penalties. Either way, it was after the worst of the PEDs era. Steroid use also doesn't result in lifetime ban until a 3rd positive test, and I don't believe anyone has tested positive 3 times (yet). So I don't think it is quite analogous to betting and the "one and done" lifetime ban penalty that has been in place for decades.

Not certain of the accuracy, but this seems like an accurate summary:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Major_League_Baseball_drug_policy#Discipline

None of the known PED offenders have been inducted into the HOF, despite not being officially banned by MLB. I do wonder when/if that day will come for Bonds, Sosa, McGuire, etc. I visited the HOF last year and they had a PEDs display/area - not sure if it quite counted as a full-on exhibit. I understand a new exhibit called Whole New Ballgame was introduced last month covering the modern era, and includes the PEDs scandal. Here is some discussion on it from the HOF website:

Here's a good article on the new exhibit and PEDs issue, written by a Mark McGuire (not McGwire). It has a picture of the new PEDs display which includes jerseys of Sosa and McGwire.

The man was fun to watch throughout his entire career. Does anyone ever think about the addictive quality involved with gambling? There are lots of guys in the hall with other kinds of problems/addictions. Not stopping when it is clearly going to impact your life is a sign that you need help, not plain defiance.

Baseball encouraged the PED era, now people want to condemn individual players - what is the standard we hold for these guys? They are pawns in a much larger $ game.

Agreed 100% cortapp -- have echoed same sentiment more than 1nce myself

if they're so worried about drug abuse, MLB could start by cutting salaries -- the dried up $ well would phase PEDs etc out quick -- won't happen obviously, as you said players now are pawns -- soulless mercenaries, team to team...

Charlie Hustle would run through a brick wall to win you a ballgame -- how many times do you think he went on the DL?

I was in Vegas last Fall and Pete was in the Mandalay Bay sports book all day with another guy and a younger Asian gal. I guess old habits die hard. I think he could have gotten his ban lifted and maybe gotten into the Hall if he played his cards right (bad pun) but it seems he has not. Too bad. I did enjoy his commentary during last year's World Series.

If that were true, probably 10% of the first 300 players should not be in the HOF.
