After Gregg and Cher broke up, Gregg joined The Nighthawks based in Washington, D.C. I caught them in Atlanta and Charlotte.

Gregg was with the Nighthawks for about 6 months in 1978 and left when Dickey wanted to put the Allman Brothers back together. Butch Trucks was skeptical about trying it again but Dickey assured Butch that Gregg had been on the road playing and singing real good. They contacted Chuck and Lamar and they said no but Jaimoe wanted in. Phil Walden talked Chuck and Lamar to play a set with the Allman Brothers at the Capricorn picnic but afterward they let Phil know it felt the way it did the last miserable months the band was together in 1976. So they when to Miami to record with Dan Toler and David Goldflies. Butch said several times in the 2000s that was a mistake. The chemistry just wasn't right and it got even worse when they fired Jaimoe, signed with Arista Records and Clive Davis telling them who to produce and to modernize their sound and hiring a synthesizer player and background singers.

Here is Jummy Thackery who was with the Nighthawks for years and when Gregg was with them... playing a FANTASTIC sounding Stratocaster!!! The sustain and tone is absolutely the best!

Jimmy said I guy walked into his dressing room in 1980 needing to sell a guitar. He opened the case and it was a 64 L Fender Strat.
Jimmy offered $700.00 and got it. Later in Kansas City a crackhead stole it. They put out fliers to music stores and pawn shops and sure enough it was sold to a Pawn Shop for $20.00 and Jimmy got it back. He later put in hot rail pickups and a Floyd Rose whammy which added to the sustain and killer tone.

Thanks, awesome version of Crossroads, Gregg doesn't know the lyrics, but who cares, it's still killer anyway! Any bootlegs CDs out there of an entire show by these guys? I'd like to hear more.

You're right, perfect tone on Apache- love the whammy and descending surfer slide on the low E string.

I was at that that Atlanta show Blackey and loved it. The Great Southeast Music Hall if I recall correctly. I was 16 and worried to death they wouldn't let me in. Nighthawks played for a bit before Gregg came out. It was very good. I know they played One Way Out, Stormy Monday and a cool rendition of Crossroads.
