New Orleans Jazz & Heritage Festival

I am trying to decide if I should go this year and what weekend would be best. does anyone have any suggestions on which weekend or bands I should check out if I go. I'm interested in seeing some of the more obscure bands and jazz bands rather than the well known bands. thanks

Looking at the line-up, I gotta figure that "jazz" is an ironic term. 😉
Looks like an incredible event, though!

I don't see how you could go wrong just seeing Jimmy Buffet, Elton John, The Who, Keith Urban, Pitbull, John Legend...

TTB is playing on the first Friday. If you are looking to not see the big acts then I think it really wouldn't matter what weekend you go.

There is great music every day, but second weekend looks particularly strong, especially Sunday May 3rd. This is how my cubes (schedule) would look if I was going this year:
Funk:
Galactic
The Meters
Trombone Shorty
Dumpstaphunk
Tony Hall & The New Orleans Soul Starts tribute to James Brown
Happy Feet Music (Brass/Jazz):
Kermit Ruffins
Glen David Andrews
Brass/Funk:
New Orleans Nightcrawlers
The Dirty Dozen Brass Band
TBC Brass Band
The Soul Rebels
Rebirth Brass Band
Treme Brass Bane
New Birth Brass Band
Stooges Brass Band
Soul/Gospel/Spiritual:
The Word
The Blind Boys of Alabama
Irma Thomas
Jazz:
Spirit of Satchmo: Dr. John interprets Louis Armstrong
James Andrews and the Crescent City Allstars
Tribute to Lionel Ferbos feat. the Palm Court Jazz Band
Gerald French and the Original Tuxedo Jazz Band
Meschiya Lake and the Little Big Horns
Preservation Hall Jazz Band
Irvin Mayfield
Davell Crawford
Donald Harrison, Jr.
Ellis Marsalis
Nicholas Payton
Rock/Blues/Other:
Honey Island Swamp Band
The Revivalists
Tab Benoit
George Porter Jr and Runnin' Pardners
Anders Osborne
Johnny Sketch and the Dirty Notes
Eric Lindell
The Radiators
Walter Wolfman Washington
Jon Cleary
Maggie Koerner
Buckwheat Zydeco
We traded JazzFest for Wanee this year and while I know I won't regret Wanee, it is breaking my heart not to be going to JazzFest. 🙁
Enjoy if you go, and hit up Snug Harbor for a Monsoon and some people watching on Frenchmen St.

I think I found the weekend to go
Bill Kreutzmann, Steve Kimock, Keller Williams, Dave Schools and Jeff Chimenti will come together as Voodoo Dead in honor of the band’s impending 50th anniversary for two shows on May 2 and 3 at the Republic in New Orleans as a part of the 4th Annual Nolafunk JazzFest Series. The shows will also feature special guests George Porter Jr., Papa Mali (May 2 only) and more to be announced.
Tickets are on sale to the general public on January 23 at noon. Tickets for the May 2 show can be purchased here and May 3 can be found here.

I would put The Word at the top of the list

No love for Trombone Shorty?
