Neil Young's first ever orchestral album. Storytone was recorded with a 92-piece orchestra and choir, fulfilling Neil's life-long dream to record with an orchestra that performed in the same room with him as he sang. The album is very personal for Young in terms of its lyrical content, as well as the mood and setting of the songs and the way they were recorded with particularly pristine sound quality. Storytone is available as a single-disc orchestral album or as a deluxe double-disc version, which contains the original album plus solo renditions of the same songs.

It seems like Neil Young is doing what he did in the 80s... making strange one-off albums, known as "Genre excercises." This time, he's doing an orchesral album. Last time it was "Letter Home" which was a compilation of other artists' material, recorded with an antique recording device. Before that was "Americana", another album of strange covers.

Back in the 80s, the critics and fans were left scratching their heads when Neil Young produced an electronic album (Trans), a country album (Old Ways), a rockabilly album (Everybody's Rockin), a new-wave sounding album (Landing on Water), etc. etc.

This time around, I don't think Neil will be sued by his record company. I am sure that his audience might shrink. But he will still have loyal fans who will eat everything he creates. But hopefully soon he'll record another masterpiece with Crazy Horse. Until then, we got some strange but interesting other things to listen to!
