Columbia Records announced today that Bob Dylan's new studio album, Shadows In The Night, will be released on February 3, 2015. Featuring ten tracks, the Jack Frost-produced album is the 36th studio set from Bob Dylan and marks the first new music from the artist since 2012’s worldwide hit Tempest.

Upon Columbia’s announcement of the album’s forthcoming release, Bob Dylan commented, “It was a real privilege to make this album. I've wanted to do something like this for a long time but was never brave enough to approach 30-piece complicated arrangements and refine them down for a 5-piece band. That's the key to all these performances. We knew these songs extremely well. It was all done live. Maybe one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded. I don't see myself as covering these songs in any way. They've been covered enough. Buried, as a matter a fact. What me and my band are basically doing is uncovering them. Lifting them out of the grave and bringing them into the light of day.”

As Columbia Records Chairman Rob Stringer explains, “There are no strings, obvious horns, background vocals or other such devices often found on albums that feature standard ballads. Instead, Bob has managed to find a way to infuse these songs with new life and contemporary relevance. It is a brilliant record and we are extremely excited to be presenting it to the world very soon.”

SHADOWS IN THE NIGHT TRACK LISTING:
1. I'm A Fool To Want You
2. The Night We Called It A Day
3. Stay With Me
4. Autumn Leaves
5. Why Try to Change Me Now
6. Some Enchanted Evening
7. Full Moon And Empty Arms
8. Where Are You?
9. What'll I Do
10. That Lucky Old Sun

Hear "Full Moon and Empty Arms":

"... marks the first new music from the artist since 2012’s worldwide hit Tempest."

Wow! No new music in 3 years? Slacker! 😉

Personally, I'll be jazzed to hear this. I'm always interested in anything that his Bobness has to offer - always knowing that it's liable to anger or alienate a great deal of his fan-base. That's been Dylan's modus operandi from the beginning, though. When you expect him to zig - he zags.

He doesn't take opinion polls in determining new directions - he just does whatever he feels like. There's no guarantee that I (or anybody) will like or even get what he has to offer, but my ears have always been open to Bob Dylan.

I'm eagerly awaiting the album of Frank Sinatra covers that I hear he's working on. Seriously.

Is THIS the Sinatra album? I didn't recognize the titles - the info on the YouTube clip indicates that this is a Sinatra song.

I'm liking what I'm hearing!

I'm with you Rusty, I like Bob's output, regardless. Matter of fact, I like the material from the 80's on better than 60's and 70's.

I'll never forget seeing him a few years back on a bill with Willie Nelson and John Mellencamp, over near Pensacola by the beach. Thankfully Dylan was last and I absolutely loved it, it was Bob with a ROCKING band. A guy next to us just couldn't get it, at all, kept asking me if I knew what the song was, saying he just didn't "get" Dylan, meanwhile I had the biggest smile on and was loving it.

I'll get this CD when it comes out.

I'm a Dylan fan, but I listened to ""Full Moon and Empty Arms" and regretfully I found it unlistenable. It sounded to me like he was off key almost every other line. But if he were playing here in Columbia, SC, I'd still probably be the first to buy a ticket. I saw him about 10 yrs ago and he only played keyboards because for some reason he couldn't play guitar - maybe arthritis. I couldn't really understand any words he sang. But when Bob Dylan is playing "Like A Rolling Stone" you're looking at the Mona Lisa - chill bumps on your chill bumps!

That would be the "one or two takes. No overdubbing. No vocal booths. No headphones. No separate tracking, and, for the most part, mixed as it was recorded" part.

I'll buy it. I doubt I'll enjoy it but I've gotta hear it anyway since it is Dylan.

I gotta disagree with you on the Full Moon & Empty Arms. I love this track. I think Bob's vocals are better here than anything he's done since Time Out of Mind.

I will agree with you on the arthritis. He switched from guitar to keyboards maybe 10 years ago. I read an interview with one of his band members at the time who said it was because Bob wanted keyboards in the band, but couldn't find anyone to play the way he wanted it to sound, so he did it himself. But the last couple of years have seen him only playing keys for about half the songs in any given set, and just singing at the mic for the rest of the show. I know arthritis stopped Ralph Stanley from playing banjo years ago, something he was never shy about discussing.

This album is remarkable...great singing, instrumentation, production and engineering.

Dylan closed his shows this last run with a song from the. album...the highlight of the show!

I too think this sums my feelings up. In Bob I trust!

If you preordered on Amazon, the album is now in your cloud player and can be downloaded. If you have not ordered yet, be sure to do the AARP offer for $1 off.

Burned mine to CD just now and will listen later. Only 35 min long, though that may turn out to be a good thing!

The reviews have been excellent and well deserved.

A very special album.

The interview in AARP magazine(the uncut version in particular) might be Dylan's best interview ever.

I guess it helps when they ask questions about music instead of all the dopey things they usually ask.

Classic Q&A

Q: Do you think of this album as risky? These songs have fans who will say you can’t touch Frank’s version.

A: Risky? Like walking across a field laced with land mines? Or working in a poison gas factory? There’s nothing risky about making records. Comparing me with Frank Sinatra? You must be joking. To be mentioned in the same breath as him must be some sort of high compliment. As far as touching him goes, nobody touches him. Not me or anyone else.

It's not bad, and agree w/ RS's Fricke that Bob's voice sounds better on this. Not silky, but not near as gravelly as on previous releases (and live). He must have found some good lozenges.

Some Enchanted Evening and Lucky Old Sun are my favorites. I recall Garcia recorded the latter.

I believe I read this will either be a DVD or will be on TV in the future or both.Sure hope so.

Susan is a big favorite of Bob's.

And for you Georgia folks,Jimmy Carter will be presenting Bob with his honorifics.

A nice lineup of some of the people Bob enjoys.

I found this recently where Susan sits in w/ Bob:

Seems like he like likes her! Not that there's anything wrong w/ that!

I'm giving the album my first listen. I like the slide haunting slide guitar. The song selection and delivery I find plodding. He is just beginning "Lucky Old Sun" and I can tell already it is my favorite track.

I respect Bob doing whatever the hell he wants to do. Personally I'd prefer an album of new originals. I'll listen a couple more times but suspect this one will spend more time on the shelf than in my player.

Regardless, I scored a single front row pit seat for his upcoming show in Baltimore. I've seen him many times, more than a dozen, probably closer to twenty, and will continue going to see him whenever the show is a viable option. I did splurge on the front row seat, less that $150, because I feel like the never ending tour won't be going on forever. I'm looking at this show as a chance to relish all Mr. Dylan has contributed to the soundtrack of my life.
