The Allman Brothers Band have announced two new upcoming archival CD releases. The band will share recordings from Duane Allman’s final show with the band – dubbed ‘The Final Note’ – and recording of their 2005 show at the Warner Theatre in Erie, Penn. Both shows will be released on Oct. 16.

Duane Allman’s final show with the band occurred on Oct. 17, 1971 at the Painters Mill Music Fair in Owings Mills, Md. Just 12 days later, on Oct. 29, Allman tragically lost his life in a motorcycle accident at just 24 years of age.

The show’s recording was captured on a hand-held cassette machine by 18-year-old radio journalist Sam Idas. “My only intention was to record the interview,” recalls Idas (quote via press release.) “This was a brand-new cassette recorder with an internal microphone, and I had one 60-minute cassette tape. I was sitting there with the recorder in my lap, and I remember thinking ‘Why don’t I try this out? I can record the concert!’ It was a totally spontaneous decision. I’d been to many concerts, but this was the only time I had the thought—and the motivation—to record the show.” According to a press release, “the cassette went forgotten by Idas until a few years ago when his old roommate asked him if he still had it.”

The recordings from the show featuring versions of “Whipping Post,” “Statesboro Blues,” “Hot ‘Lanta” and more (full tracklist below). The package for ‘The Final Note’ will feature never-before-published photos from the show, liner notes from band archivist John Lynskey and a photo of the actual cassette Idas used to capture the legendary evening. According to a press release, “despite the obvious limitations that come with a 50-year-old cassette tape, modern technological enhancements help restore the magic of this significant night.”

The second archival release is the band’s July 19, 2005 show in Erie, Penn. According to a press release, this show is “long hailed as one of their best ever by the band members themselves.” At that time, the lineup consisted Gregg Allman on vocals and keyboards, Jaimoe and Butch Trucks on drums, Oteil Burbridge on bass, percussionist Marc Quinones and guitarists Derek Trucks and Warren Haynes. (This lineup, which came together in 2001, would remain until the band played its final show in October of 2014.)

The show happened to be one of the few “Evening With” shows of the tour, meaning there were two sets with no opening act, which “gave the band room to stretch and set
the tone differently from an amphitheater show.” In addition to performing Allman Brothers Band staples such as “One Way Out,” “Dreams” and “Don’t Keep Me Wonderin’,” the band also incorporated stand-out covers such as “The Night They Drove Old Dixie Down,” “Don’t Think Twice, It’s All Right” (with guest vocalist Susan Tedeschi) and “Into The Mystic.” The band also performed a rare show-opening version of “Mountain Jam.”

“I was feeling it while they were playing,” said Bert Holman, the band’s manager since 1991, when asked if he knew this show would be one for the books (quote via press release). “Ultimately, I knew it had been a great night when they started coming off the stage and everyone was like, ‘Man, that was a great show!’ I remember Oteil and Derek particularly being pumped about it, Haynes was pleased, and Butch was just raving about how over-the-top the show was. They all told me that they needed a copy of the show, which says a lot right there.”

Nice! Any new ABB is welcome, but a late 1971 show is a gift, especially Duane's final show.

A new 2005 show is nice. Not to sound unappreciative, but with so many shows available from that era, that doesn't blow my hair back.

This definitely bodes well for future archives that we've all been hearing about. I'm eager to hear the quality of the final Duane show.

At this point the one that would blow my hair back would be the release of the full 3/21/05 show or a triple with the highlights form 3/22 also.

Any fresh 2001-2014 shows will have to be really special or unique to get my attention. There's just so much of that already out there.

I agree with you porkchopbob. I have One Way Out (their last live album and last new release period), The Fox Box and some other stuff of the last lineup. What I was hoping for was a Jack Pearson show from 1997 to 1999. One I attended in 1997 in Raleigh was especially hot from start to finish. Jack sang on Dimples and he and Dickey came to play. All of them did. Gregg was singing real good too.

Dickey played a yellow Strat all night but his tone was similar to Dickey's usual tone. Not sure if he borrowed that guitar or if it is the yellow Strat he played No One Left To Run With after 2001 with Great Southern. Gave him more of a Bo Diddley sound than the custom Les Paul's he used mostly then. Those Les Paul's Dickey had then from the custom shop were some pretty guitars. I think he had about 7 and his son has one of the Goldtops as his number one now.

So, this guy tapes Duane's last show before he died then forgets all about it for 45 years?

.... and then his old college chum just happens to ask him after 45 years if he still has the tape?

.... meanwhile several unscrupulous bootleggers have been compiling fake shows purporting to be from this date for years!

.... I sincerely hope that as strangely unbelievable as this story is that people have done their homework and it is in fact legit

.... I wonder

.... did anybody think to ask him if they could also have a copy of his tape from 6/26/71 at the Fillmore East?

Hey Vince, hope you are doing ok ... to the best of my knowledge, all the shows that have been in trading circles for many years purporting to be from this date have been proven to be false ... either shows from another date being passed off as the final show, or a fake show fabricated by an amalgamation of tracks from other shows by an unscrupulous bootlegger ... hence my scepticism regarding this release ... but I really hope that it is genuine and has been cleaned up enough to make it worthy of release ...

I too hope the powers that be are willing to sacrifice a bit of what they stand to make on The Final Note and spend some money on remastering and/or appropriate sonic improvements!?!...I DO NOT want to subject myself to the horrendous audio quality that marred Fillmore Wesr no matter what the historical value is!?!?!

We're talking about a cassette tape, recorded with a portable tape player with an internal microphone, in 1971 in the crowd, and people are whining about what it's going to sound like?

That's the funniest thing I've read in a very long time.

I will be grateful to hear this whatever it sounds like.

"whatever it sounds like"!?!?!....THAT is exactly why current management trots out sub-par content and charges for it as if they spent some time, effort and money on it!?!?!....You/we are getting what we will accept, which translates into what we deserve...
I guess.

Let's hope the performance transcends what is sure to be terrible audio quality (given recent experience!?!)...as did the Hendrix Experience Hollywood Bowl show in the recent Ladyland package!?!?!

Gotta disagree with how this 'definitely bodes well for future archives'!?!?!....A complete show with Pearson or Herring might, but not more from the final lineup---can you say Cream of the Crop set!?!---and unless the show with Duane is transcendant and/or of acceptable sonics,, it's just more of the same from a team more (not equally) concerned with $ as quality.

Sound was acceptable by the last show, but just barely...And the issue with questionable dating--how many shows that weekend were there exactly?--further cast a pall over the release. The curators (sic) don't seem to want to work TOO hard (see also recent Hourglass/Joys releases!?!?!)

Ya know, I am thinking at this point, I might well agree with ya on the 'anniversary debacle'!?!?!...The package can't hold a candle to the Dreams box, but given the morsels of rarity included, like the cut with Herring, it certainly could have...IF the curators had their values aligned correctly!?!?!

well i don't even own it. i bought one from amazon where discs 1,2,3 and 5 were worthless. packaging was ripped. got a replacement and disc 5 had multiple skips. amazon wouldn't send another replacement or just a disc 5 and thats all i needed

Surprisenly for me I didn't order the 50th. Heard early on there were quality issues even with some of the CDs skipping. I was disappointed with sound quality issues with some of Fillmore West.

Also I wouldn't buy the 50th just to have a track with Jimmy Herring in the ABB. I would buy an entire show with Jimmy and I long for an archival release with Jack Pearson especially if he sings Dimples.

I have some great sounding Widespread Panic tracks with Jimmy and really enjoy his style. Jimmy has a Fender Strat with what looks like humbuckers routed into the body that has a great tone and a good sounding PRS on it too. Of course Jimmy would sound good on a 1962 Sears Silverstone 15 dollar guitar with a mini amp.

Well, there was chatter of archival releases and now we are getting them, that's all I meant. Never said anything about the final lineup. As I already wrote, I don't see the point of more releases from that era when there is so much already out there (except that those guys are still alive to profit).

I never bought the 50th boxed set. I never saw the point of it - not enough new material for diehard fans, too much material for casual fans. Never got Fillmore West either - I can listen to it for free on YouTube if I ever feel the need.

Agree with sentiments already shared. Unless a 69-71 show is utterly transcendent, I am not sure another release adds anything to the bands legacy. Some possible ideas for future releases that might pique some interest:

Spring 1996 -The boys really got out there on True Gravity and some new songs like Tombstone Eyes (before it was rewritten numerous times), I Know I Oughta Leave Here, etc. They could potentially do a box set of the Chicago run.

March 20 1998 Beacon - an all around interesting show w 2 Liz Reeds and a great version of High Falls

Summer 2000 - something after June when they added Loan me a Dime and Done somebody Wrong into the mix. The sept show from Raleigh seems like a highlight or Toronto w Warren and Woody. There are a few shows with Oteil song “walk like a man”

Beacon 2001 - features a bunch of new material and rarely played tunes. One show w Chuck I remember being really good.

2003 - Montage Mtn - interesting extended jam w Dark Star and the Other One

Other Beacon shows pre 2007 w guests.

I know there's lots of that lineup out there and the hard cores like us would rather see a Pearson or Herring release to have something new - but as a consolation - they did cook in 2005. I want an officially released Egypt though! 2005 was peak Egypt - if they were going to do a show from that year - they should have made sure it had one. Sneakily one of their finest instrumentals - huge, huge jams in Egypt in '05.

Totally agree. Saw the ABB at Spac in 2005 I remember Warren said we have a new instrumental and it just about blew the roof off of the place. Derek was on fire during the song and I remember thinking the next studio album is gonna be amazing which never happened. I think it is better than instrumental illness.

Totally agree how the tune inspired the band as iToo saw them launch skyward when they played it!?!...Glad to have 2003's Note, but the absence of a followup is a pox upon the latter years (especially as stunted circumstances have been described during some interviews)!

This little saga sounds more thana little suspect, but with each new archival release, I become more skeptical about the sequences of events involved in the curation, markeing and issue of the packages. In fact, I am now just about wholly convinced those involved are not cognizant how they are failing to live up to the legacy of the ABB.

It is what it is. Do you expect through the magic of modern technology that "they" can take a 50 year old tape from a portable recorder with an internal mic and magically de-couple the wave into 16 track audio for mixing and mastering individual instruments, then put some on the left channel and some on the right? C'mon, man? I was just being realistic about this particular release.
