Need Techie help on AV reciever / amp

OK, I was squeezed into buying a new tech home theater type receiver amp. I want to use it to interface the big screen TV and the blue ray to. then I want to use the audio output jacks on the back (RCA analog jacks) to run to my old analog receiver with equalizer and speakers. Seemed simple to me. So I bought Yamaha unit. I get audio to speakers and headphones. I get no output from RCA output jacks (Audio Video marked AV out: L&R &Vid). Manual says I should get output regardless of source selected. They say use to connect to a "recording device" with a drawing of a VCR looking unit. Now, audio out analog is audio out analog as far as I know. I am on my second unit and same result from both, but both were from same production run. There is no programmable menu for audio out. Should be always on. I seem to get voltage readings at jacks but no sound. I called tech support, they thought I did everything right and may be hardware issue. I am going to return unit and try another brand. Anyone do analog out off a digital receiver for recording or to second unit? Am I missing anything?

to clarify I get audio on the speaker outputs on new amp and headphone jack, so point is audio circuitry works on new amp, can't get output off AV jacks is issue.

My Denon receiver will not pass a digital source to an analog output. For instance my blu ray player audio is connected to my receiver via a toslink optical (digital) cable. I cannot pass this audio to my zone 2 output (RCA analog). This is a documented limitation of my receiver, wish it wasn't... Not sure if this is what's happening in your situation.

Do you have the same issue whether or not the digital source is copyright protected?
I certainly don't know, but your new receiver may have some type built in protection of copyrights.
