The Youngbloods did indeed perform the most popular version of "Get Together" but Jesse did not write the song.
Clues: The name of the author of "Get Together" is not the same as the singer of the band in question. After penning a couple of hits, he adopted a stage name and went on to front this popular band, well known in the rock world. This band was never wildly successful, only had one Billboard hit at #49, but they are recognized as one of the original creators of a certain genre of rock.
