My Project

I've considered making this post several times but always talked myself out of it. I wasn't sure of the reception it would get or maybe none at all. Anyway, I am an ABB fan and have been since the early to mid 70's when I was a young teenager and I purchased my very first LP. Of course it was an ABB album and the love affair has continued. So, anyway, I started burning my own CDs for my commute. My round trip every day is about 80 minutes which is perfect for one CD-RW. I've begun burning them as if there was a radio station that played all Allman Brothers all the time. I take different tracks from different shows and sprinkle in studio tracks, Duane's session recordings, pre-ABB stuff I have managed to locate and some solo stuff from Gregg and Dickey's various bands. With all the different variations of the band and how they approached the songs, all of the special guests, etc. there is a wealth of stuff to choose from and it has been a lot of fun. Sometimes I will put in a show in its entirety or maybe just a few songs in a row. I have managed to accumulate about 150 shows plus all of the studio albums (minus Reach For The Sky and Brothers Of The Road as I see no point) and whatever else I have been able to find. So far I have made about 20 CDs and it has been a lot of fun. I still haven't managed to get any editing software that would allow me to fade in/out, overlap, etc. That will come in time. But that forces me to leave in long periods on tracks which sometime includes introductions of other songs that I am forced to add in whether I really want to or not. Anyway it has turned out pretty good for my non-musician ears. There is Duane playing with the Dead, Steve Winwood guesting, the original Live at Fillmore and a great show with Jack Pearson from London, Ont. Anyway, the point of all this is to ask people for suggestions on particular tracks that you think are outstanding and what shows I should try to acquire. My resources are very limited so I have to pace myself in purchasing but a few people on here have been very gracious in giving me shows when I have nothing to trade and I continue to buy the Instant Live stuff as I can. So if you are willing to help and make suggestions of what I can include in my little project I would be very appreciative and I apologize for the exceedingly long post.
Peace.

Great project. Free software that will cut, fade , ovelap, track,fx, everything, is Audacity :
http://www.audacityteam.org/home/
For mix CDs it has a cool feature to fade and overlap ends and beginnings of tracks.
It's the standard for free editing, known as "The Poor Man's Pro Tools", many here will vouch for it.
Always thought an epic audio journey would be a few choice Mtn Jams faded back to back.

Thanks that's a huge help. Looks like I have a lot of work to do.
Back to back interweaved Mtn Jams from different lineups would be very cool.

I haven't figured out the editing software yet. But I have completed 56 CDs so far.

Hey Birds if you get Audacity installed, feel free to.pm me, can get you started - it looks complicated, and it can be, but the basics are easy, not much different than the cut and paste text editing familiar to you. Its all import document, select sections, drag to isolate, choose function, save, same deal.

I would like to get the editing sorted out but, if not, it's not too big a deal. It's only for me so I will just have to learn to deal with it. It is a "warts and all" collection as there are many imperfect tracks included. The sound quality of some early tracks is less than ideal and there are other of life's little foibles sprinkled throughout. But I am thoroughly enjoying this little project. Not sure how far I will go but it's been worth the effort so far.
I did drop you a PM.

Cool project --- something I know others have done that I'd love to see taken to the next level is a long string of just the solos from the same song but from differing vintages.
I'd be willing to contribute some change to support your efforts and regardless if you tried the above idea - PM me if interested.

Thanks. Editing is down the road a bit. I'm not sure I will be able to share any of this anyway as a lot of the stuff is copyrighted and I want to stay on the right side of things.
Brother Rabbit suggested several different Mountain Jams, of different eras, interweaved into one track. If I ever get the editing down pat that's one I'm going to take a crack at.

I've passed 140 CDs so far with no end in sight. I'm pretty light on certain eras so that's a bit frustrating but I have managed to get a little something from most of the various lineups. Having listened to about a third of it all the way through I find myself wanting to start over. I knew this would have to be a "warts and all" project but some of the tracks I chose just don't really work.

Capt. Skipper did his YDLM of all Duane solos.
It's incredible.

That sounds very cool.

It is.

PM me your mailing info if you'd like a copy.

Thinking about adding the Taj Mahal version of Statesboro Blues followed by the classic ABB version from Fillmore East. The decision I'm mulling over is whether to then add the Telluride '91 version with Taj Mahal and Gregg sharing vocals. That would be three versions of SB back to back to back. That might be a bit much.
Somewhere later on I will probably do the same with Bobby "Blue" Bland's version of Stormy Monday followed by the Fillmore East classic.

I will say Never knew how Much I needed you from brothers of the road is one of my all time favorite ABB songs.

I should probably break down and get those two albums. I didn't really think they had many redeeming qualities but there are a few songs worth having. The only version of that song I have is a show in Pittsburgh from December of '81. It is, IMO, the worst show I have and the worst one I've ever heard. I listened to as much of it as I could take but I felt really bad for GA the whole time.
