My brother Jason Orme was filling in for one of her guitar players whose wife just had a baby. Funny thing, Jason's girlfriend is expecting this coming Monday! He'll finish off his segment of the tour this week. Jason is playing the red Gibson ES335 in the first video, a couple different guitars in the second. The last one features one of Kelly's background vocalists; Jason is at the far left.

The sound is not the greatest because the bass was just WAY overwhelming in the mix, causing havoc with my Canon point and shoot.

I thoroughly enjoyed the show, though. Kelly is a supremely talented entertainer and a great vocalist. And I was really surprised at how many songs I recognized...........she's HUGE!

He's been up at this professional level for a lot of years now, but it still blows me away that he can just jump in with someone like Kelly who is not even his regular gig, learn the songs in a very short period of time, and go out there without even a hitch. A PRO all the way!!

Clearly, Kelly didn't ask “Do these pants make my butt look big?”

I consider that a classless low blow. Here you have a VERY sweet and talented woman who has not yet lost the weight from her first pregnancy and is pregnant again. She's out there entertaining people, doing a damn great job of it, and not worrying about a few extra lbs.

Yet there are always going to be those who hold her to this unreasonable standard of "slim", something that women who are more on the portly side are going to be judged by in our looks-oriented society, whether they happen to be an entertainer or not. Thanks for perpetuating that unrealistic and cruel standard.

My musician son did a internship on Saturday night live a few years ago. When she was a special guest she asked him to go out and pick her up some hamburgers. He said she was a nice lady very funny.

Ouch!

Not a comment on Ms Clarkson's body shape - more on an exceptionally unflattering choice of stage costume.

Given Ms Clarkson's career path via American Idol, I thought she would be highly image-conscious. Maybe not.

Congratulations to your brother on the gig!

Despite coming from a city with three American Idol winners, I am not a fan of the show (for numerous reasons). But some of those guys have steady/touring bands with some top-notch players. In my old town of Birmingham, you can see Taylor Hicks playing with John Kulinich (also of Rollin' in the Hay) - one of THE finest pickers I've seen anywhere! - and often David Keith (Tommy Talton Band - record producer) onboard.

I love the idea that some of these "talent show winners" are bringing up the local heroes - those world class players that can be found in most every city! 😉

Can I be nosy and ask what a guitar player gets paid for 1 night with a pop music act of this size?

I know it's rude, but I'm curious.

I've always assumed that it's either really good money, or really bad, and probably more on the low side as, again I assume, there is that "you're lucky to be here" factor in consideration (what a great opportunity).

All that being said, congrats to your brother for getting to do this. Neat-o.

I don't consider that nosey but by the same token I WOULD consider it nosey to ask Jason how much he makes for a gig. He doesn't tell me, and I don't ask. I assume it's Union scale, though. Union scale at a 25,000 capacity amphitheater would be a tad higher than for a nightclub, I'm sure.
I do know that he did an audition with Ziggy Marley in early summer of 2014. Ziggy took awhile to get back to him, but Ziggy wanted him. By that time Jason was booked. But he said the money was not what he was used to making so he didn't mind missing the gig. I have no more details than that about how much he makes.

As far as your remark regarding the "you're lucky to be here" factor: It has nothing to do with luck and a LOT to do with talent, hard work and professionalism. He's not lucky, KELLY is lucky to have a slick pro like Jason Orme to fill in when one of her guitarists need a break. And it was not just this one gig, he did two weeks of gigs with Kelly, which I think was around six shows. FYI, he's been with Alanis Morissette since 2001, which means he is the senior member of her band. But Alanis is not always active, so when she's not, he fills in with stuff like this. He's done it with many, many artists. He tells me it gets old..............having to come in and learn all their songs in a short period of time, because it's a lot of pressure. But he's good at it and has a reputation as a reliable pro.

He came out before the opening act (there were four bands) to see me and my friend in our comp seats 15 rows from the stage that he got for us. He was only able to chat for 10 or 15 minutes, then he said, "I have to go. There's a few things I need to go over to make sure I don't screw up tonight." That gives you an idea of his professionalism and why big artists continue to ask him to fill in when he's not busy. In 2011 he did an entire summer tour with Sarah McLachlan. I got to meet her backstage............what a sweetheart, but so was Alanis when I met her. I didn't meet Kelly because Jason had to leave right when the show was over.
