Mountain Jam (Live At Watkins Glen, New York, July 28, 1973)

Not the greatest Mountain Jam ever. But, I can see way Butch was not a fan of this version.

It is a little sloppy. But it has Jerry and Bob in it and The Dead was always a little sloppy and free wheeling to me.
Butch and apparently Gregg too, never were that big on The Grateful Dead.
They said 600,000 people were in the audience at Watkins Glen and Jerry was afraid to fly in the helicopter so he found someone to drive him to the stage through the sea of people and it took 5 hours. Why would a man who regularly used dangerous levels of smack and blow then be afraid to ride a helicopter?
The best versions of Mountain Jam was by the original lineup of course and apparently Duane got the idea from Jerry. I never thought the Chuck/Lamar lineup was real strong on Mountain Jam and the ABB basically dropped it. The last line up brought it back, actually the 2000 lineup with Jimmy Herring did and they did good versions too.

There’s a copy floating around out there of the Mtn Jam from Nov 1993 Fla., Dickey’s first gig back from a few months’ hiatus - had it/don’t know what happened to it ::dangit: - Scott Freeman wrote about it in Midnight Riders
